Africa continues to produce plenty of people. While the article seems to dismiss racism out of hand, it is the only intellectually consistent explanation for these “pronatalist” beliefs. Likewise, there are millions of people in Southeast Asia who would love to live and work in Japan. Japan’s shrinking population could be reversed almost instantly if it changed its immigration policies.

People’s reactions suggest they too believe themselves to be overpaid. The harm to the laid off Googlers is they will not be able to find a job paying anywhere near as much because they are not each adding $300K plus benefits to the value of the company annually.

Times are good now. $3.6 billion is $36 billion in a decade. One day, Google may need that money to survive. Also, Google’s 2022 profit was $67 billion (down significantly from 2021) so they just increased profits by more than 5%.

I own a Tesla and live 200 miles from the closest service center. If you have a problem, chances are that it can and will be fixed by mobile tech. I had a problem with my door handle (a typical problem in early Model Ss). Mobile tech came to my work and swapped out the handle in the parking lot. I never saw the tech. When I got an upgrade to the latest autopilot computer, a Tesla tech came to my house and did the install, which took a couple of hours, in my garage. I just left the garage door open so he could get in. And no oil so oil changes aren’t an issue. I get the occasional tire rotation at a local tire shop and that’s it for maintenance.
