on: Ask HN: My boss doesn't think I'm doing good work, how to proceed?
I think this is a pretty normal experience for a new dev. I had a similar thing happen to me after one of my first projects, a guy who I didn’t even realize was my technically my boss pulled into a meeting room and asked me why I took so long. It bummed me out a lot because I thought I had done a good job and in a reasonable time. I got over it though, and apparently they did too; I ended up working there for another 2.5 years before changing jobs because I wanted to move back to my home city.

on: Loving Someone with Depression
When I read these comments and see so many fellow HNers are in are in relationships with depressed partners it makes me wonder what’s going on. My ex wife was severely depressed for over a decade and so is my new partner of a couple years. I know leaving my ex was the right thing to do but now I’m back in a pretty similar situation. Having a partner who won’t get out of bed til after noon, won’t exercise, and eats only junk will drag you down no matter how hard you personally work on your own health.

Libreoffice subtly reformatting the documents sent to me by my divorce lawyer was not the most fun thing let me tell you.

on: Casio F-91W: The strangely ubiquitous watch (2011)
These are great! For less than $10 each, I’ve bought a bunch of them and left them scattered around my apartment and various other places so I can always find a watch. If it’s starting to take me too long to find a watch then the watch density must be getting too low, so I order some more.

on: U.S. Accuses Google of Illegally Protecting Monopoly
You really find it funny that someone on HN is defending the company whose resources and internal innovation culture lead to advances that are foundational to all the technology we work on today? So maybe they charged too much for their phone service, big deal. I’d argue that their contributions to science and engineering outweigh that.

on: U.S. Accuses Google of Illegally Protecting Monopoly
Antitrust was a disaster for Bell Labs, which gave us inventions like the transistor and Unix. Nothing as noteworthy after the breakup and string of acquisitions. In the same way I’m worried for all the moon shoot projects at these big companies if they are broken up. I suggest reading the Idea Factory and then see how you feel about breaking up big tech.
