le monde is oligarchy-owned garbage

le monde diplomatique and mediapart are a lot more independent, and (maybe correlated) leaning a lot more on the left

bedane | 6 years ago | on: Ask HN: Unable to detach emotionally from work?

Anecdotal(worked for me and a friend):

Find another activity (hobby, sports, taking care of someone, meditation, side-project, anything) and gradually have it replace work in your head.

You won't be able to "detach from work" because the mind (especially in people who like to think) doesn't work this way. You'll have to expel it/push it out.

Any time you catch yourself thinking about work in an emotional way, or outside your office hours, force yourself to shut it down and think about the other activity you chose as replacement.

This process took me years but it's really been worth the effort.

cash - an enabler of crime

The sentence : ...[bitcoin] is only superior for criminal uses... shows a lack of knowledge about the technology and economics involved imo.

You'll have to invest a couple of evenings reading the tutorials/installing the right stuff/setting up a playable world/getting lost in the awful menus/etc. before you get to have fun, but it is worth it!

bedane | 9 years ago | on: Ask HN: Is Xamarin worth learning?

Xamarin is only worth it if you already have lots of C# code you need to reuse in mobile apps(our formerly windows-only company had to)

As a day to day user, I quite dislike it. But rewriting our business code was not an option.

bedane | 9 years ago | on: Microsoft no longer allows admins to block Windows Store access in Win10 Pro

This reminds me of the mandatory updates for the cheapest windows 10 version.

In the era of bloated/invasive OSes and arbitrary pricing according to the customer's profile rather than according to the value of the product, you don't pay more for more features.

You pay more for the right to deactivate the unwanted features.

Some day you will have to pay for disabling all the "telemetry" and "unique advertiser ID" stuff. Or maybe that's already the case, I didn't bother checking.
