Haters-be hate'n. And how exactly does the one process per tab of chrome address memory issues? Chrome is complete garbage for me after 30ish tabs. Talk about unresponsive...

On another note, the work environment is a crowded open space with people constantly yelling to each other. They advertise a 50 hour work week with no lunch break. My impression is that your base salary is just over $100k, without any indication of bonuses for software engineers.

If (emphasis on if) that is true, the only reason I can see people going there is a false sense of elitism.

I agree with the spirit of this comment. It's a freaking huge world and you can go broad or go deep but most people can't do both.

As an aside, why do we beat ourselves up so much over this sh*t? We're the most self deprecating group of professionals I've ever met..

Why all the hate against CS education? It's a tough balance between theory and vocation...but I think it's extremely short-sighted to think vocation should rule all.

Typical MS BS...like how they artificially limit the number of Tcp connections unless you buy the server editions.

Or like how you bought that vista home basic version of windows and it didn't even have administrator tools enabled.

Probably not for a while. At this point octave has a TON of Matlab compatibility:

The grammar is pretty spot-on although there is usually some release latency when Mathworks changes it (obviously since their plans are not made know. Ahead of time).

Octave even has Matlab source level compatibility for mex files although they are slower than octaves own c interface.

If you start drifting away from Matlab core needs into the specialized add ins Mathworks provides (simulink, financial packages, etc) then Octave can't help. If you need those then I find that Matlab is rarely the tool for the job either (you just don't know it yet ;))

Thanks! I needed a reminder why I hate C so much.

You must be a language lawyer in order to do anything moderately complex and then be met with "the standard doesn't say anything about that!" when you realized the standard library doesn't include the most basic of things (yeah comp.lang.c, I'm looking at you...).

Yeah, I know. C++0x will be the grand unifying standard to rule them all...sure.

botj | 14 years ago | on: Time to fork the FSF

Agreed. Without the extreme left, by definition the moderate viewpoint will slider further and further to the right.

"I’d worked places with a trial period before, but it was always just a matter of not..."

Will you be on probation after that grammatical "bug"? By the way, you guys sound pretentious as hell. I'm surprised you don't lose more than 20% in the three month trial.

What's the point in the trial? If it's not working out, just fire them.
