On a practical level, some reliance on commentary is necessary, no? Or at least a combination of commentary and curation of the constant firehose of new information, which feels like a form of implied commentary itself.

Primary sources are only an improvement on commentary if, between you and the commentator, you are the one with the combination of expertise, time, and objectivity better suited to extract truth from the source, and this weighing of suitability is going to vary from source to source.

New Computer Science research? Maybe I can parse it better than some. New novel treatment for insert-disease-here? I need some help.

If I want an efficient method of receiving information, I read. If I want to listen to two people have an interesting conversation, or have information conveyed in a way unique to audio (eg. Hardcore History), I listen to a podcast. Two different mediums with two different appeals, imo.

There's also the passivity of it. I can't read while I drive, but I can listen, and length doesn't really matter in these cases because it's a way for me to pass time as much as anything else.

May just not be your cup of tea though!

There's a definite spectrum of cruelty, with factory farming near one extreme and many forms of hunting near the other. How much cruelty one can stomach (literally, in this case) is up to the individual, of course.

If it's a more sustainable, cruelty-free source of protein than is currently available, and if it's safe, why not? There are multiple big "if" statements there, but should they all pass, I'd be all for it.

Love the looks of Zola, have you used it for a personal project yet?

Also, I'm a fan of the concept of decentralization, but I dislike how much it is now associated with the "crypto-bro" demo. Have you seen any projects capitalize on this new wave of decentralization while staying clear of the "Web3" side of the internet?

bradleysz | 4 years ago | on: Ask HN: Difference Between Metaverse and MMOs?

There is a lot of overlap. There is also a lot of subjectivity at play.

Personally, I think of MMOs in a mostly gaming context, with some niche offerings such as Second Life or VR Chat leaning more towards the beginnings of a simulation-like experience.

Whereas with the Metaverse, I imagine the transition of traditionally physically-based tasks to a virtual or augmented reality world. These tasks could be work meetings, hanging out with friends, taking classes, along with lots of other things, including playing games, which is where the confusion between MMO and Metaverse reaches its peak. Some people seem to lump Web3 into the same basket though—as I said, lots of subjectivity with this being such a new and vague term.

The term 'Metaverse', at least as it appears to me, is so vague and broad as to almost render it meaningless. As a proponent of mixed reality I've been disappointed to see how Facebook has latched onto the term to the detriment of MR's reputation. Although, one could argue this is a bit more forgivable when considering the massive efforts they've undertaken to improve the accessibility of early VR.
