bru_ | 10 years ago | on: Small Data: Tinder-like apps are the way of the future

This is so dumb... One paragraph they're introducing the concept of "small data", the next paragraph they're talking about how getting the swipe information for huge numbers of users helps them train their collaborative filtering algorithm...

Ultimately it's a big data hype article... GASP we can infer your preferences from your behavior... Written by someone with a Medium tagline of "Sassy futurism. Tech and words."

Look this comes off as totally weak. If you're a strong developer as you claim you have no god damn problem. Tell your wife, "Look these assholes are busting my balls, I'll figure something out within a month" and hustle your ass off and you'll get a job. The market is hot as fuck right now and it is easier than ever to get a high paying job.

If you have no university degree and next to no industry experience, 40k is not that far off the mark. But if you're doing the work of a 75ker, you should be able to convince someone you're worth at least say 60k. I find it strange that you had kids before you were making the kind of money you need to support them.

"But the researchers experimented with different queuing systems, and when they told volunteer queuers that people would be selected from the queue and served at random, the average wait was reduced."

This is all around a much better system than FIFO. Of course LIFO is the fastest on average, but you want there to be a reasonable, predictable bound on how much time an individual can expect to wait. An extension of this policy could be "partially random first come first served", where you just start at the first person in line and flip a coin with probability 0 <= p <= 1 of getting heads, and if you get heads they get served. If you get tails you move to the next person, with the only exception being the last person in line.

In practice, for airports I would prefer to have the people sitting in the back board first. Then you wouldn't have so much congestion from people blocking the aisle while they stuff their bag into the overhead compartment. Also you shouldn't have to sit in your seat longer for the same flight if you bought a first class ticket.

I am jelly of some of my friends who got really good at programming in high school. One dude managed to replace the keyboard drivers for every keyboard on the entire network with garbage, so that if they plugged in another keyboard, it still wouldn't work. He also gave his English teacher a "wacky mouse", where she would be presenting something and at some random time her cursor switched and behaved as if attached on the end of a spring. She would often inspect the underside of the mouse in response to this problem.

I can relate to this story. One of my funniest memories was when my 7th grade teacher reprimanded me for "putting a password" on my website. She was referring to the username and password fields in the sidebar. I told her everything on the site was visible without a user account, but I guess she didn't believe me, because she made one that night. Of course she didn't find anything. The best part was she filled out her whole profile, including a picture of herself, her interests "knitting, helping children", etc, just so she could have a chance at discovering an imaginary section of the site where everyone at my school was lambasting her.

Is anybody else irritated with the incredibly tryhard tone in this article? "venison glazed in honey, served with a sweet potato hash"? Seriously??? It's an article about bloom filters for god's sake, not Leveraged Sell Out for the tech industry...
