on: Deep Learning Interviews book: Hundreds of fully solved job interview questions
> ... I'll seriously consider a regular non-ML position.
What about asking for more money at the end? Multi-stage complex interview process eliminates more candidates. Some, like you say, will opt for a developer gig instead, probably because ML wasn't something they were interested in to begin with. That narrows down the list of candidates even more. Either "play the game" and ask for more money or don't play the game at all. Let employers pay extra for polished candidates.

on: San Francisco mayor pledges more police, safety measures
I don't think people can make politicians accountable as long as primary incentives for those politicians are campaign contributions from corporations and wealthy donors. A politician only has motivation to do bare minimum not to lose elected office. As we have seen with CA governor - even utterly failed governance, mandate firings and senseless school closures do not sway the public enough. If _that_ can't do it, what else can? It seems that the only real way to vote in US is with your "legs" - i.e. move to another state (an option that countries like Austria do not even have :-( )

> I would still call that a victory overall.
Humanity declared victory over every single pathogen to date (eradicated, contained or seasonal) because we are still here and thriving. We should go on with our lives.

on: Opt Out of Cynicism
It has been my experience that the skill to be outwardly "visionary" and at the same time remain cynic at heart gets rewarded most handsomely, especially in corporate world. We all have been in those meetings, town halls and off-sites where all the right, inspiring words are routinely uttered and amazing examples of leadership are described. Yet, once you exit the meeting room and actually work with and get to know those leaders - you quickly realize that it is cold, hard, calculating cynicism (and thus true understanding of reality) is what that drives their (sometimes "behind the scenes") actions and results in conquering the corporate ladder. My personal level of respective incompetence has been reached when I found myself unable to spew that BS with conviction from a podium.

on: PureOS 10 is Released for all Librem Products
Every dollar that Purism puts into its products as opposed to marketing is a dollar well spent. Good products advertise themselves. But before they can advertise themselves they need to become good. Catch 22. Purism is on the right track though.

on: PureOS 10 is Released for all Librem Products
Got mine two months ago - original backer. Last year Purism offered backers to choose the batch - I replied - put me in the latest one possible, because I wanted most up-to-date hardware. I could have gotten my device in May if I would have chosen an earlier batch.
Also moved twice in last 4 years and Purism accidentally sent it out to old address. When I noticed that and asked for help - they stopped the package and re-sent me a new one to the new address.
Very happy with the device. Very happy with service and support. Freedom is well worth waiting for.

> Aren't they already 'demonetised'...
That affects only content creator. YouTube, even if not directly profiting from ads, profits indirectly from you staying on the site and moving on to other 'monetized' videos eventually.

on: EU plans to force OEMs to use a common charger for all phones
Apple created very profitable side business of licensing its proprietary connector to anyone who wants to create an accessory to iPhones. Uber-strong commercial motivation will never incentivize Apple to do the right thing - which today is switch to USB-C. The amount of electronic trash that this side business generates has a huge tax on the environment, not to mention inconvenience and extra spend for iPhone users.
While government regulation is usually the road to hell paved with good intentions, nothing else will force Apple to do the right thing. So, I guess, we'll have to choose "lesser evil"?

Wasn't it Henry Ford who gave us 5 day work week? 5 days to work, 1 day for church and 1 day to get out and buy the cars he was making.

That dataset is biased. Russia is under numerous sanctions and no western country will consider sputnik due to political pressure, even when licensing vaccine from Russia would benefit EU, as an example, currently missing the timely delivery of tens of millions of doses.

on: Show HN: Healthcare Is Dumb
No, it works exactly as it was designed. Health insurance keep s costing more, cover less and not care about helping people in the time of need. That is not an accident. It is a result of concentrated effort of lawyers, lobbyists, salesmen, etc... - a whole system that maximizes profits and market share at all costs, and not the quality, breadth and affordability of healthcare. It is like that by design. So the results are logical - we pay more and get less. And will continue paying more and getting even less. There will be a point in future when this approach will "meet its maker", the hope is that will happen sooner rather than later.

on: Incentivized Guardianship
There was an article or a documentary (cant find it now for some reason) about a corrupt "professional" guardian and a judge. She would find older people or couples with some assets and no or remote relatives, come up with some bullshit story and take over guardianship in court with the help of the judge.
She'd then charge $7 / min if ward calls her for anything, would do unnecessary repairs, move them from their house into a tiny studio, and then to nursing home shortly after, etc. Basically everything she can to drain the assets as soon as possible.
What was really striking, that in some cases there were relatives who'd find out about what is going on - and even one couple's daughter could not take guardianship back from that professional guardian in court.
I don't know how widespread such abuse really is, but with the sheer amount of power that guardian has and the fact that wards are usually old, sick or disabled people, i can imagine the abuse is rampant.
