| Probably using a lot of Metaio tech

Almost certainly - Metaio presented realtime lighting estimation at InsideAR (their dev conference) in late 2014. It's also been shown by Hans Kaufmann's research at TU Wien in Austria [1] although this has tighter links with other vendors than Metaio.

I've had the pleasure of dealing with most of these folks within the last few years. They all have their own specialisms around certain tracking methodologies, pricing models and other features. Evaluate them with your own purposes in mind, and choose the right tool for the job.

| will have no play at the industrial/enterprise market if it limits its tools to development for the iOS family

In this market, Vuforia really does have it fairly cornered - it seems to be a chunk of what PTC are chasing, although they're far from turning a blind eye to B2C.

Edit: Grammar fail.

10 years ago I was working in Canada; couple of friends and I (Australian, British and Québécois) decided to go and ski in Montana for a few days. We had a few beers on the way down and stopped just before customs to drop off open cans before we crossed the border. Being 11pm, we were the only people at the crossing. As we circled round they decided something wasn't right (probably justified although not in their jurisdiction) - 4 hours later we were allowed into the US having been fingerprinted and our car searched on a ramp for what I assume was explosives or drugs. 3 days later we returned to the border travelling the other direction - the CBSA officer looked at the cover of all three different nations' passports before saying "I'm sure there's a visa in there somewhere, have a nice day."

CASI instructor turned AR/VR developer here and I'll second this - balance is only a part of the equation. The model used to train instructors includes in brief;

- Flexion / extension of the legs - Forward / aft pressure - Subtle steering movement with the knees - Fine control over the angles formed by both knees and ankles

All of the above vary depending what point of a given turn you're currently in and need to be coordinated in a fairly intricate fashion to get perfect pencil lines and turn "properly". I'll leave properly in quotes there because YMMV and you don't need these techniques to snowboard; having spent 3 months full time learning and using them I can say they make a big difference to how far you can push yourself though.

A significant proportion of the sensation also comes from the inertia that you carry whilst on an edge, the resistance from which would be near impossible to convey without doing it for real.
