Yes Chinese use different words for the two sides of the family.

Also, depending on which part of China you're from, first cousins whose fathers are brothers (thus having the same surnames) would refer to each other as brothers and sisters.

That part is rather confusing sometimes but otherwise Chinese is very precise in enumerating your relationships.

This is outright copyright infringement. To read the article online you need to be a subscriber to the New Yorker magazine (link: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/01/18/100118fa_fact_... ) I doubt that scribd link has their permission to duplicate and redistribute like that. I know this is probably not a popular thing to point out but if this is acceptable then are we going to start linking to torrents of pirated movies too?

Funny how the author completely ignored a similar college in a similar situation. Yale is building two new residential colleges to add to its current twelve. Construction is underway already. Saying that elite universities purposely limit the number of students admitted is baseless. It's not as easy to expand as one might think. Furthermore, many of these universities do graduate level research that can be world changing. That's also another part of an university's mission, which the author also ignored. This is quite ironic given all the Nobels being handed out right now.
