I recently learned that open burning of plastic waste produces lots of soot that might have a non-negligible effect on capturing heat from sunlight. So there's some causality between plastic waste and global warming.

czam | 3 years ago | on: Ask HN: Does anybody still use bookmarking services?

I'm running a bookmarking site with a specific set of features at kntm.org and am using it since 2014, please join!

I also use OneTab (or similar) to clear up open tabs. I use Pocket just for sending articles to my kobo reader and Instapaper for read-it-later. Also using Materialistic app to quickly save HN articles.

I think the basic functionality of bookmarking will never be obsolete.

What's even worse is that even today Belgium fails to realize what a great cultural heritage they have in Paul Otlet's work. The remainders of his collection are dumped in a museum in the city of Mons which completely misses the chance to explain the originality and reach of Otlet's work and ideas.

czam | 11 years ago | on: Show HN: Addict – a Python dict whos values can be get and set using attributes

Yes, .attribute syntax is much nicer than brackets, especially on German keyboard layouts (needs "Alt Graph"). Why can't dicts just support both? Because of the Zen? Also this is an old issue, see Alex Martelli's bunch class recipe on ActiveState http://code.activestate.com/recipes/52308-the-simple-but-han...

The mutate-on-get makes it very similar to how Matlab does its "structs", I'm mostly undecided on that but at times it can be nice.

In my 146 updates the first third is younger than 1 month, and about 4 in the 146 I have already found by ususal ways of following the literature. But the list contains a higher 'concentration' of interesting sources, than any issue of my favorite journals. That's good support for any researcher.

czam | 14 years ago | on: One-time Secret: Share passwords etc with URIs that work only once

fantastic. any application that has a password should also provide a method to generate a few one-time log-in urls that one could use from untrusted computers/environments. These uris could be issued with different privileges: e.g. for email, providing just access to the data younger than maybe two weeks.
