if the clove hitch is tied near the end of the rope, you can take the tail and tie an overhand knot with it around the standing line to back it up

The application and material of ropes has changed over time, specifically ABOK was published just before the advent of Nylon ropes.

what about apple bananas? what about intersex people? do you consider them "mentally ill". if someone feels happier to transition, why does that bother you?

on: Identify Plants with an App
or go get a book on plants and you will be able to identify them pretty easy. The guidebooks ask you questions to narrow it down (how many petals does the flower have? for example). you dont need any knowledge going into using one, and you'll learn to observe and appreciate plants more as well through the process of IDing! newcombs wildflower is the go-to for beginners on the east coast but there are many.

on: TidalCycles – A language for the Live Coding pattern
Tidal has a MIDI add on which makes playing with MIDI instruments quite fun! I get patterns of notes playing and then fiddle on the knobs of the synths. So much fun :-)

on: Tell HN: Riseup.net fails to update canary; fingerprints deleted without notice
Before the most recent update, it was updated April 10th. So 121 days between updates. At the same rate, it would be updated next around December 21st. But yeah that is a strange tweet, and lack of tweets since is also strange.

Think of all the people that have been distanced from the project because of his behavior. Think of all the other people who would be distanced from it in the future if his behavior was tolerated and defended by the organization. This is really not a loss at all!

Actually, if you get into it, there is so much cool overlap between webdev and 3d, with three.js and webGL and everything. A lot of people doing really cool stuff in that space, one person to check out and get you down that rabbit hole is Vince McKelvie- really amazing stuff.

on: That awkward moment when Apple mocked good hardware and poor people
"Maybe Apple really does find the idea of hardware that can function for five years 'sad' and funny these days."
I don't think this is true. Apple just replaced the motherboard on my 2011 Macbook Pro for free. I've also upgraded the RAM, HD to a SSD, Battery, & Fans. Its running soooo good I love it.
The price of 5+ year old macbook pros, imacs, and mac pros on ebay is proof that apple does make hardware that lasts... Anyways, I'm interested in the relationship between apple releasing new products and the aftermarket value of older version. I think apple releasing newer ipads probably makes older used ipads more affordable..
