The nvidia shield it depends on the app. Kodi you can adjust volume in app and on the sound receiver, while Netflix just shows a message every time you hit the shield volume control. I hate the Netflix option, is my bloody hardware it should be my choice how to use it

on: Why is Apple acting like an asshole?
Don't worry Apple hates users too.
I've once had a Windows update break software, and I was easily able to downgrade the broken update (and it wasn't really MSvs fault entirely, graphics driver issue).
Multiple times I've had ipad updates break apps, and some apps have never worked again because the developers don't bother updating the app, and Apple blocks downgrading because...

on: When you browse Instagram and find Tony Abbott's passport number
It's nice to live in a country where not only do various parts of the government actively try to help someone with a really bizarre issue, but no one got arrested (or shot) for bullshit trumped-up hacking charges. I can't think of many other countries responding well to 'hi I'm some random person and I used the PM's boarding pass and found out all this secret stuff'

on: Disrespectful Design – Users aren’t stupid or lazy
See I find this an example of a user being lazy, and I experience this frequently. They are not even bothering to read what the computer is saying, just giving up and knowing/assuming that you will figure it out. They don't value your time, and cannot be bothered to expend the slightest effort to solve their own problem.

Bingo
It really annoys me when they bitch about not being able to bring in skilled workers from overseas because they can't find skilled people here... Hey, maybe they should fucking train someone!
Usually when a tech boss is complaining about not having skilled staff locally it's code for "... I want to find someone cheaper overseas". It's like seeing a job ad that wants a wizard at everything but has terrible pay, they just want to import a cheaper worker.

You do realise Apple could still do this in their app store AND allow 3rd party app stores?

on: AMD PSB Vendor Locks EPYC CPUs for Enhanced Security at a Cost
Australian Consumer Law would make Dell liable for damages if anyone bought a computer from them that damaged a CPU by design. I don't even think that having a warning attached would be a sufficient shield, because it's impossible to 100% guarantee that an end user fully comprehends the consequences of a computer that is designed to permanently alter how their CPU functions.

In fact Australian Consumer Law flat out holds them liable for costs due to problems a seller could have reasonably foreseen

This is bullshit. Unless it clearly says at boot 'continuing will permanently prevent your CPU from being used in a non Dell computer y/n?' they are asking for a lawsuit for damaging hardware

on: Is the web getting slower?
It's not just web pages, modern software engineers just make terribly unoptimised programs. Why does a recent game on a powerful pc take longer to open that old DOS games? Not just loading a level, but even getting to the start screen takes ages. Wtf takes 20+ seconds to show a menu of New - Load - Options.... (drm probably)

on: Why Johnny Won't Upgrade
Have you ever used any complex software, especially aimed at specific skills / occupations? It's like they throw darts at balloons to randomly select which UI elements are being moved each release. I've used Word every day for years and I still struggle to remember where uncommon functions are in the ribbon. Going from an older Photoshop to the most recent, finding the correct icon means I have to stop and figure out what it is now, slowing me down. I flat out cannot figure out the new Photoshop start up interface and immediately reenable the old one. Every person at work who upgraded to Office that changed the Save UI to the online shit absolutely flipped their shit.
Software companies are forever forcing unwanted changes on users who use the software all the time, and it absolutely and costs time and money to retrain staff to be able to keep doing the work they were already trained to do. No user or company wants existing functionality changed

I'd like to live in a world were instead of developers just breaking an existing api, they leave the existing, in use apis and add new ones. It's ridiculous how often shit just breaks because an api is changed in an update.

on: What harm do minimum wages do?
The richest person in Australia seriously floated an idea to import foreign workers and pay them $2 a day to work in her mines
I've always looked at minimum wage as an employer saying "I'd pay you less if I legally could". In workplace negotiations all of the power is held by the employer, unless you have some form of collective bargaining, and having a Government mandated minimum prevents companies from totally exploiting low paid workers.

I for one am glad that they ban all alternative web browsers, so I don't have to deal with issues like using addons I like or not having pages randomly reload because ios thinks they should. Enforced lack of choice is awesome. I wonder what jailbroken app idea Apple will steal next...
