What a wonderful article/anecdote.

I have and will always be an advocate of human connections. My experience of working across a number of agencies and startups has been the best focus on that (though it can be hard to sustain).

I would love to work with people and at places that understand and realise the value of this.

The article isn't very informative.

I watched a video of Emad Mostaque (Stability AI CEO) recently; he alluded to discussions with Apple, but who knows to what degree. The general thrust being we need to have greater control over our data and that's one of the things Stability is working towards, which chimes with Apples overall approach.

Wow this is fascinating. Some random thoughts popped into my head.

- Would this drive up the cost of these vehicles?

- Is there likely to be a fundamental change in the way that these components are sourced, a move away from just in time?

- Is this mirrored in other industries?

deepandmeaning | 8 years ago | on: Mobilizing an ER department to handle a mass casualty incident

This story is incredible.

The standout's for me were:

* Plan - have a plan in place in advance * Flow - recognise and shift bottlenecks + understand the impact to the system * Prioritise - rank what is critical, urgent, or standard - and be ruthless * Process - simplify the processes to make it more effective and efficient * Shift - innovate and adapt in the face of changing circumstances.

These sound like no brainers, but reading the story you get a sense of how one individual pushing these forward in a tough situation had an incredibly powerful impact.

How could we apply these powerful lessons more widely?

deepandmeaning | 8 years ago | on: Lincoln Said What? Bogus Quotations Take On A New Life On Social Media

I've been collecting quotes for years (publishing some of them here: http://thinkmindful.com )

For me other peoples pithy insights bring solace, a new way of looking at something, and a recognition that any struggles I may be going through are not unique to me.

Does the fact that some of them are wrongly attributed bother me? Only a little, I like to get it right. But the meaning behind the message is the main thing.

That was a fascinating read. The difference that makes the difference appears to be Gate's ability to focus sharply and in-depth and dedicate himself to that purpose. Notable from this piece is his ability to 'think different'. It's a challenging strategy for success which few can dedicate themselves too.

This piece by Malcolm Gladwell in the Guardian similarly covers 'think different' strategies - in this instance using examples of high achievers with Dyslexia or who were early orphans, and the strategies they construct to survive and thrive. http://www.theguardian.com/society/2013/sep/28/blessed-weak-...

I never thought of it like that. Rather then passively consuming content in the vague hope it will come in useful one day, or endlessly reading best practice guides or hot new trends/technology. But instead to search for the information as and when you need it.

Perhaps we over rate serendipity in the vague hope something will come along and solve a current problem, or more truthfully we're looking for distraction and legitimise it by linking it to work in some way.

Either way - it's given me a new perspective. Thank you Daniel, I always find your articles insightful.

Wow. Thank you for sharing. Quite inspirational. Have you written more about this [albeit very personal] subject in a blog or elsewhere? Would love to read more... All the best.

deepandmeaning | 14 years ago | on: Standing invitation: if you want to talk software, I want to talk to you

Thank you Patrick. At present I run a niche email marketing company. It can be rather isolating and my social circle or friends find it challenging to offer support/insight/help.

Reading blog posts (and comments on HN) from open, insightful, and yes inspirational people such as yourself has been great. I've often thought how wonderful it would be to meet or otherwise meaningfully communicate with those I respect and admire - and have made an effort in the last year to get out to Meetups (such as the Hacker News one in London last week). I've considered setting up my own sort of 'pay it forward' network; generally it's easier to provide meaningful insight or analysis into others issues, than it is to move forward on ones own.

I just wanted to let you know that your offer is greatly appreciated. I sincerely look forward to speaking or meeting with you.

deepandmeaning | 14 years ago | on: HTML Email Boilerplate

I found the hacks for display issues in various clients to be very helpful.

It's increasingly difficult to design HTML email templates which render well across all clients, this usually leads to design for the lowest common denominator. Usually Outlook and Gmail.

I'm sure there are loads of considerations for ISP's with regard to spam and other issues, but forcing design/rendering of HTML to 1990's type style and functionality is rather restrictive.

At some point I hope things will change, but with the popularity of mobile clients growing (and their small screen issues), I suspect if anything it will not.
