"What happens when 4,500 people ask for the same feature? At Firefox, we build it."

What a weird flex. I think if you make >700 million dollars a year you should have someone driving instead of feature farming the comments section.

derfnugget | 2 years ago | on: FAQ on Leaving Google

I'm a software engineer with 5 years at a FANG company. In the entirety of your time at Google did you ever identify a high performing contractor and make your mission to make them a full-time employee?

derfnugget | 2 years ago | on: Am I the Unethical One?

Where's your head aaaaat. Where's your head at? You are unethical because at some point you decided it's not about teaching them, it's about catching them. I think you should take a minute to think about what your role actually is. Time is limited. Spend it on what matters.

derfnugget | 4 years ago | on: There are too many video games

Seems like you're burnt out and you're trying to burn out everyone else as well. I create games in my free time for fun. I enjoy it. I have a game on Steam. It's not great but it's not nothing. And it's mine. Negative energy is what will make the world crumble, and this is a blog post full of negative energy.

derfnugget | 5 years ago | on: Great Hacker != Great Hire (2004)

> I'm not saying I am a great hacker, but I do sympathize with this fussiness.

Nobody assumed you were. And by sympathize you mean putting forth the argument that "great hackers" are the worst hire an ISV can make?

The author portrays himself as a coding by profession, 9 to 5 paycheck programmer, and also as the best possible hire because he has identified the users as being the primary goal. Weird.

I assume that the way he writes software is similar to the way he is piggybacking on the passion and expertise of Paul Graham.

derfnugget | 7 years ago | on: What did Google+ get right?

For me, circles seemed to do the opposite. Instead of blasting an update to every person on my friends list (coworkers, family, friends) I could limit the exposure to a subset.

This seemed like a better way to control spam in the ~3 posts I made on Google+.

derfnugget | 7 years ago | on: Uber’s Undoing Part I: Whipping Boy

"...CEO Travis Kalanick has been plagued with an array of allegations against himself and his reports...illegally obtaining passenger medical records to discredit rape allegations against Uber drivers, anti-competitive action, opportunistic surge-pricing during natural disasters and terrorist attacks...paying hackers off to hide a data breach, surveillance of passengers and journalists, career sabotage and infighting, over 200 claims of sexual harassment against employees, corporate karaoke escort bar visits in Korea, law enforcement evasion, annually cheating drivers of $500 million, profiting off of lazy background checks resulting in the rape and murder of multiple passengers...industrial espionage, fraud, breaches of fiduciary duty, and worst of all, Kalanick just not being a nice guy."

Worst of all!?!? Seems like him not being a nice guy is the least offensive thing he has done.

Pre-link-click: Ooo another site by Google these are usually pretty cool; at least they're well made... First impression: LOL this site was made by Google?! Page load is atrocious. Interaction using mobile is very bad. Lasting impression: This is like some weird developer designer hybrid that encourages...I don't even know...Extra....Weird...serifs

derfnugget | 8 years ago | on: Ask HN: How can I experience SF and Silicon Valley in two weeks?

Sign up for the Meetup.com event at Google HQ on June 23rd. They've put a cover on the event($10) but I've been to many of these and can confidently say it will be worth it. Plus, they serve food, beer, and wine. I just signed up and I'd be happy to meet you there. (HN lurker and FrontEnd Dev in downtown SF).
