Isn't there an inherent need in programming to express an explicit "nothing" value? Coming from Python and JS, I never found None/null to be much of a problem. I in fact like the distinction of null and undefined in JS. Using null allows you to distinguish from the accidental undefined.

Sorry to be a pedant, but the grammar and capitalization in this guide do not instill confidence. "How to Design Software Good" <- design well? "How will Your Users Do Their Work?" <- Seriously?

doubletgl | 7 years ago | on: Basic Income caused crime to drop by 40% and strengthened workforce?

From a guardian article: "Olli Kangas, an expert involved in the trial, told the Finnish public broadcaster YLE: “Two years is too short a period to be able to draw extensive conclusions from such a big experiment. We should have had extra time and more money to achieve reliable results.”" https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/apr/23/finland-to-end...

Further: "The scheme – ... – is strictly speaking not a universal basic income (UBI) trial, because the payments are made to a restricted group and are not enough to live on."

I'm still hopeful. Also, what other plan is there to deal with wealth distribution and automation dissolving jobs?

Or maybe someone misclicked. Headline is sensationalist, he could simply create a new twitter account. I don't see how this affects him attending the conference. Don't they send out email newsletters as well anyway?

doubletgl | 7 years ago | on: Why some job adverts put women off applying

Wasn't there a study concluding that women tend to under-estimate their skills and men the opposite? If we assume that to be true, a long list of responsibilities is more likely to put off women because they don't think they can cover everything (or enough of it).

The initial investment in MTG is higher, since you start with zero cards, but there is an independent market where you can purchase almost any card directly. I personally prefer this over the gambling and crafting mechanic in HS.

This contra-UBI argument is often made, but I find it a bit short-sighted. Instead of having "survival" or "career" as a overarching goal in life, (some) people will have to find their own purpose in life. It's a bigger challenge but I believe in human adaptability. The question is how painful it will be initially and how long it will take for people to settle in this new mindset.
