I get those emails. It's too bad the reply-to email address never works. I've tried a couple of times to let them know that it'd be hilarious if they shared my porn watching habits with my friends and family and that to explain that I'd like a copy of any of the videos they supposedly took of me.

I don't present myself as something other than what I am. So, they can't really blackmail me. Life's easier when I don't do anything I'm ashamed of.

drdavid | 4 years ago | on: After 50 years of the war on drugs, 'what good is it doing for us?'

I used to think the same thing, until I read an article that made me look into it. The article I read was a local affair that pointed out that inmates are encouraged (in my state, Maine) to file absentee ballots in the town they lived in prior to incarceration.

There are just a couple of states that allow that, but I learned that quite a few jurisdictions restore rights after incarceration, after probation, etc...

I think they might be one of those 'free-market' types, with a whiff of Ayn Rand. I read a number of their other comments.

I am not answering for them, merely observing a trend.

I'm definitely on the side that favors heavy market regulation. History shows us that it works better with heavy regulations - that is that it works better for more people rather than better for a small group of people. In the US, something like 52% (the last time I read some numbers) have invested in the stock market. I'd rather they be treated fairly, with a more equal playing field.

Hmm... It looks like it's now 53%:

The sticky stuff on the bat shouldn't cover more than 16" from the handle. It may be 14", but I'm pretty sure it's 16".

So, while some could get on the ball, it's not very likely and it'd not be in very high quantity.

Wait, no... I decided to check before hitting the button and I'm too lazy to edit the above. I misremembered. It's 18". (Section 3.02)

The point remains the same. Ideally, you'd be contacting the ball much further up the bat. There still might be some transfer, but probably not a whole lot.

drdavid | 4 years ago | on: Volkswagen hack: 3M customers have had their information stolen

I honestly don't know how many times my data has been stolen from various entities. The biggest/most important was the OPM breach, but there have been so many more that I legit don't know the number of times and would have to paw through a bunch of records to find out.

drdavid | 4 years ago | on: Few people know that Google voluntarily removes some search results

I wonder what checks and balances are in place.

Can someone be a complete dirtbag and request that legitimate criticism be removed simply because they don't want folks to know they're a dirtbag?

Can convicts request the results be removed? How about sex offenders? How about people convicted of domestic violence assaults or similar?

drdavid | 4 years ago | on: Link shorteners: the long and short of why you shouldn’t use them

I have a new project site that's largely viewed by technically competent people. All my other logs indicate that I get a mere 50 to 75 unique visitors per day - not heavily trafficked. Google Analytics often counts about 10% of the visitors, which is easily confirmed by checking all the other metrics that are available to me.

So, yeah, I'm not sure how much longer they'll be a viable source of data.

I purchased a new C8 to add to the collection until my granddaughter is old enough to drive. The HUD is very, very good. I'm not sure how they managed on such a sharp windshield, but it's crisp and clear even in the brightest of conditions.

With them making so many things mandatory these days, I'd not be surprised to see them making HUD mandatory. It absolutely is easier and faster to read then just looking down. It may only be measured in milliseconds, but it's definitely faster.

It has been a long time since you could get a truly bespoke car from a major manufacturer in a reasonable price segment.

But, you used to be able to order all sorts of stuff - or not order it. For example, you could save a few hundred bucks by not having a rear bumper, not having a radio, opting for manual windows and transmission, opting for no cruise control, etc...

There were a multitude of options and you could add/delete most anything you wanted.

These days, it's down to packages and colors. Often, you can't even mix packages and trying to get manually controlled windows will usually get you laughed at.

The Vivaldi mail thing must have been in the works for a while. Since very early on, they offered an email address at their .net domain. It wasn't integrated or an email client, but they had that aspect setup early on.

That's actually measurable. You take the data from before the change and the estimations (based on similar changes elsewhere) and plot how long it takes for the traffic to reach expectations (in terms of things like throughput and decreased collisions). With that, you can find out how long the average drivers took to adjust.

It can be depressingly long.

I have been putting my Linux notes online in the form of a blog. I use a plugin that estimates the time it takes to read each article. I try to keep them all under five minutes, unless I specifically set out to write a longer article.

Inside that, I also try to not use more than 300 words without a new sub-heading, avoid too much passive voice, don't use too many overly long sentences, and don't use the same first word for more than two sentences in a row.
