More important than popularity measure itself is WHERE the languages are popular. Python is popular in startup ecosystems and professional developers whereas Java only in academic circles and some android developers (who are also gradually switching to Kotlin). So, in terms of "popularity where it matters", Python is in much better position than Java.

What if the plebeians don't mind privacy intrusions? What if they are happy to give away their privacy on a platter if they are getting free email, digital maps, traffic stats, cloud drive and a whole lot of other goodies from Google? Never underestimate the power of freebies!

Forgive me for being a contrarian but I see nothing more than yet another Stallmanist rant in this?

Ceej and company are trying to portray NPM as the villain here, but is the entire JS ecosystem's burden their's to carry? They keep whining that Roald Dahl is miserable and all despite inventing Node and why the NPM founder is so rich with VC money, etc. According to me, therein lies their hypocracy:

On one hand, you declare your altruism and how you care about commons and not money but on the other hand, you try to imply guilt on those who try to earn money out of JS ecosystem! How is this fair? You do your job and let them do theirs, I don't see how NPM is made the villain here?

But a "restaurant on wheels" is a idea that will be truly profitable, at least in theory! Its true that restaurants abound in localities today but mobility of people (and their eating preferences) from one location to another has also increased. Restaurants which are profitable today may not be tomorrow. A restaurant on wheels can easily adapt to changing demands by constantly moving on from low demand areas to high demand ones. Maybe, Amazon can even build an AI or something to guide it for most efficiency.

My gut feeling is that Google won't pull this stunt with chrome, this is some kind of scare mongering or a PR tactic, I dunno.

It doesn't make a logical sense because if they are banning the ad-blockers, it means they accept that chrome is largely used by power users who can install these blockers (otherwise, what's the need?). But they should realize that a power user who installs an addon can just as easily move to another browser like firefox/brave. And the PR repercussions will ensure that a lot of newbies will leave too (because they usually follow the power users on youtube) which will essentially kill the advertising income that they wanted in the first place?
