on: Almost all new car sales in Norway last month were EVs
1) new Evs are still more expensive than new gas cars
2) in some states, the registration fees are higher (+$225 in Washington State)
3) if it's your only car it may be a bit limiting, unless you are willing to rent a gas car on occasion.

I suspect it won't help. If your key is compromised, the previous sessions are compromised as well. I.e. the attacker now knows the password.

If it's encrypted, it's not deduplicable and not compressable

1.5k per month is more than 23tb of hard drives for 10 years ....

I have 5TB with a few hundred thousand pics in immich, and unfortunately opening the mobile app is slow (it loads some state from the server and that takes forever...)

Perhaps you have not noticed release notes. There were bunch of releases where you had to change the docker compose file, and you can't just apply updates automatically to immich.

on: I got robbed of my first kernel contribution
I will point out that finding and root causing a bug (and perhaps writing a test) is THE contribution. Very often fixing the bug, once all unknowns have been resolved, is trivial.
Many times a one line fix takes days off debugging and analysis. Seems like this was the case here, since the original bug was open for 6 years.

on: Tech compensation in 2021
If you want to purchase a home, you probably need to replace 2k with 4k-5k/month for a mortgage on a home (30 year loan) + ~1k/month in property taxes.
Add two kids, each 2k/mo/child in daycare.
That's 7k/month extra.
Still leaves you a nice chunk though.

on: Windows 11’s first update makes AMD CPU performance even worse
We have a computer (laptop) from 2011 - Lenovo w520, with 4 core i7 (second gen) and 16GB ram, full hd IPS screen, and factory SSD, and dedicated Nvidia Quadro with 2GB graphic ram. Boy this computer still rocks, and the battery still lasts 2-3 hours.
I think there weren't that many advances in raw speed. The only thing it is missing is HEVC hardware decoding (i don't remember if it has h.264, possibly not)
What I'm trying to say: 10 years is not that much for computers these day?
