I can definitely follow along with this or any game of Jeopardy!, but my problem is that I just don't know all the answers. To me this is part of the appeal.

This is definitely faster-paced than regular episodes of Jeopardy!, but I don't think it's prohibitively fast for native speakers.

It's too bad that Jeopardy! doesn't fit in with international pop culture better. I think it's a perfect fit for a lot of AI problems.

fefzero | 15 years ago | on: Ask HN: What kind of personal financial investment do you do?

Starting young is great. You're hinting at one of the other keys that has helped me, which is to make it automatic. This is often more important than the vehicle you choose for investment. If I automatically invest a certain amount each month it's just like you say - I never miss it because I never see it. Make saving as easy as possible (and what's easier than automatic?) and spending as hard as possible and that will drive your savings rate way up.

I think the point here isn't just that the CEO was performing a mundane task, but that he was doing work that had to get done, even though it wasn't a desirable task. There was a giant pile of dishes - he cleaned them. The dishes were the thing that needed to get done.

If he does it just once, I question his motives. This repeated behavior shows his true conviction.

I think they left a few things out, like playing back local media. This appears to be built on android, though, so maybe that means that functionality like this can be enabled later. I wonder if it will support hardware decoding for H.264 and WebM.

fefzero | 16 years ago | on: UIs that lie & the users who believe them

I certainly bet it's a large struggle. The costs to redesign (based on the real business process), implement, and train users on the new system would be incredibly large. This is another reason to get things correct in the requirements analysis when designing the original software. Unfortunately a lot of software out there either didn't have that process or didn't do it well - much of our software is based on the process that was optimized for a paper-based system.

Does anyone have any experience with optimizing processes like this or data about those costs?

Related to this specific article, I wonder how statistically significant these figures are, because the sample size (number of touches) is comparatively small. This has a lot to do with the reason baseball defensive metrics aren't as good as batting metrics: a player gets a lot more chances at the plate than he does in the field, and they're much easier to evaluate.

fefzero | 17 years ago | on: How To Build Something Real (In Your Spare Time)

At first, some of these items seem to conflict (like "something every day" and "let life intrude"), but these are great rules of thumb. From what I've seen, too many developers just set out on a path without really mapping it out first.

In my own experience I have often used the excuse that my project is so small that I don't need to write anything down for it, but that always comes back to bite me when I have to "let life intrude" for a week or so - I come back and I'm totally lost as to where to go next. Having lots of little milestones makes things go much more smoothly.

fefzero | 17 years ago | on: Git is Wesley Snipes. Mercurial is Denzel Washington

I agree. The only thing he says about Mercurial is "I've used it some, and found it to be incredibly pleasant." That doesn't tell me anything. This could potentially be quite interesting to someone like me who has used a DVCS, Git in my case, only a handful of times, but instead it ends up as anecdotal.

fefzero | 17 years ago | on: 3mindme - Dead Simple Reminders

I agree. It definitely needs to get down to one page. I'm not sure if it was by design, but the page I saw was just a bunch of plain text on the screen with no text wrapping. The service might be great, but to an uninformed user it might look like there's something wrong with the site, causing him to leave without reading. Based on the title alone, I expected to have some sort of interaction with the site itself, I didn't realize that my only interaction would be via email. Great idea, and a great home page will help it appeal a wider audience.

fefzero | 17 years ago | on: Ask HN: Review My Web App - OnMyMission.com - LDS Missionary Profiles

I think the purpose is pretty clear, but it would be nice to have an actual demo instead of just screen shots. One thing that seemed a bit off to me was inconsistent capitalization: "missionary" is sometimes capitalized and sometimes not (I would suggest that it not be capitalized) and the sentence at the top (Share your Missionary's Photos, Experiences and More with your Friends and Family!) seems like it it's too long to have most of the words capitalized. I think it'd be easier to read in all lowercase.

I agree with patio11 on the lightbox effect, but I still think it needs some sort of tour or demo instead of just screenshots. I visited a similar site recently (not for missionaries, but for high school graduating classes), and I'm leery of creating an account here just because that site had poor usability and about ten pages for registration.

fefzero | 17 years ago | on: YouTube EDU Launches, So Go Learn Something

I agree. While I like that YouTube EDU has lots of classes, it just doesn't match Academic Earth for the organization. YouTube EDU seems to rely more on search, but Academic Earth has a well-structured taxonomy that makes more sense to me in an academic setting. With more sites out there like this, this should only increase the bar so that we end up with better resources.

It can do a dual display setup. Click on "compare" then on "complete specs" (2/3 of the way down) on the page for the Mac Mini here:
