I'm a female developer. I'm not going for CS, but a Systems Engineering degree. I share classes with lots of women (well, in the best of situations, we're 1/3 of the total population of a classroom). Even knowing lots of women going for a SE degree, I can count with one hand the female developers I know. Most of them aren't interested in developing, but in functional analysis and leading teams.

I agree with teaching Tau first. Personally, it took me at least a week to begin to understand radians, and almost a month to understand it pretty well. Tau is more intuitive than Pi in this case.

I'm fluent in English, learning Esperanto (mother tongue: spanish). Took 3 years of Portuguese at high school. I'm learning sign language too (i'm not deaf), does that count as a natural language?

+1 to that.

College is not to teach you "how to be successful" or "become a better coder". In this case, it's about giving you the tools to learn to think. (...I think this doesn't apply for med school, though)

I agree with this. Here, I do PLENTY of group work. Business plans, software, use cases, etc.... EVERYTHING is made in group.

flomincucci | 15 years ago | on: Ask HN: What books are you reading

Just finished reading The Loser by Thomas Bernhard. Cruel, repetitive, ironic... effing brilliant. It's about three pianists - one of them it's Glenn Gould, and how meeting him ruined the life of the other two. Currently reading High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. I can't be objetive about him, I simple love it. (The movie is great, also)

All of my friends and coworkers use Google Talk. I don't even have MSN! (and I barely use Skype, since my desktop computer doesn't have webcam nor microphone). In the end, I use the videochat feature on GMail, because it actually works pretty well.

I guess it all depends of the people around you.
