I think it's always better to have just one big screen.

Using multiple monitors come as a merit when someone needs to have multiple windows displayed at all times.

I think one way you can make this by using a single screen is to use a tiling windows manager.

frnkshin | 7 years ago | on: Ask HN: What linux desktop tools/apps boosted your productivity?

The one app is i3wm. People say tiling wm do not help boost productivity, but it certainly did for me -- or at least I think that it did.

From hardware aspect (although it was never asked), I use a hhkb type-s with the hasu controller. You may think it's a small change, but the fact that you can remap the arrow keys to {h,j,k,l} also helps because you no longer need to stretch your arm to your arrow keys. It did cost a bit of money, but I'm happy that I have it. And aside from the arrow key remap, I also remapped other keys to help with basic functionalities.

Didn't China gravitate towards mobile payment due to counterfeit money?

And also the centralized mobile payment system makes Chinese government to track every purchases that are made in the country.

frnkshin | 7 years ago | on: Ask HN: Best robust laptop for everyday software development

T480s is great. (I think I got my config for around $1600 with deals -- i5 8250U, WQHD, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD)

You could opt to get the IPS 1440P panel instead of the stock 1080P TN Panel (I'm not 100% positive if it's TN or IPS). I think 8th gen i5 is sufficient for daily dev work. The laptop keyboard is pretty decent compared to other brands (Dell XPS, HP Spectre, MAC, etc).

It does come with some flaws due to Lenovo's very bad quality control.

When I ordered my T480s, I had to exchange it due to very bad backlight bleeding that was worse than the normal circustances.

In terms of weight, it's pretty light, and is pretty good for travelling.

One of the other drawbacks of the T480s is that there is no official hard-shell casing. Honestly, I have no idea why some Thinkpad users have ideas against having a case on their Thinkpads, but I think it is totally viable to get one, as it would prolong the lifetime of the laptop unless you destroy it pretty hard.

I would opt to get the non-backlit keyboard, as I have 0 use cases when it comes to backlit keyboards. I think it gives a more sticky key feel to it as well.

Overall, I think T480s is a great choice.

frnkshin | 7 years ago | on: What personality tests really deliver

I didn't really read through the entire article. As a firm disbeliever of personality tests, the point I want to argue is the fact that most of these personality tests are done by the testee. The tester and testee is one same person, and therefore can not lead to the objective conclusion or result the self.

frnkshin | 7 years ago | on: IDE vs. Text Editor

I feel like the post is poorly written. I believe the article is clearly written by someone who has never extensively used an editor {vim, emacs}. Although I do agree that the clean vim/emacs will only have very limited capabilities, it is so obvious that people that do use vim/emacs for development work do customize their setups via their custom/personal dotfiles.

frnkshin | 7 years ago | on: Ask HN: Why salaries are not going up?

I think that's exactly the reason why titles are all just b.s.

It should be more like, pay $200000 because he's good rather than because he is a senior engineer. Companies should get rid of the titling bull crap and just let it all be based on salary.

frnkshin | 7 years ago | on: Ask HN: Recommendation for noise cancelling headphones?

I have a QC35 (the google assistant version) and it does keep away the noise and is super comfy.

If comfort is a big reason when you pick your headphones, if you have big ears or glasses like I do, then this is the way to go.

Audio quality is meh. I tried out my friends Sony WH1000XM2 and it has way better audio quality.

frnkshin | 7 years ago | on: TerminalView – A terminal inside Sublime Text 3

A solution to having the unnecessary terminal inside an editor is to have some type of tiling window manager.

This can be Awesome, i3, bspwm, or anything out there.

You can also try using tmux or even gnu screen.
