on: NIST removes Dual_EC_DRBG
If you read the bottom of NIST's press release, they've tasked their Visiting Committee on Advanced Technology (recently co-chaired by Vint Cerf) to do a review of NIST's crypto standardization process. Their review will be released to the public.

on: Huge hack 'ugly sign of future' for Internet threats
"Attackers used a well-known method to bring down a system known as Denial of Service (DoS) - in which huge amounts of data are forced on a target, causing it to fall over."
Really? If it's so well-known, then perhaps Dave Lee should inform himself that DoS is a method, not a system. Does the server literally fall over too??

Yes, for sure. As someone who works there, there's nothing more annoying for staff assistants sitting through hundreds of irrelevant calls from uninformed people reading a script. It's not a problem to call offices already in support of the legislation, but make sure those calling know that before they dial!

This is the right question. ICANN likes to put out these happy press releases, but they don't give us the details. It's necessary to name and shame the TLDs that are behind the curve.

So, what's your plan re: pushing legislation? Have you identified who in Congress will serve as a champion for your cause? Are there any lists of specific demands that any good legislation would address? Changing your avatar on Facebook, Twitter, or G+ won't sway anyone.

Here's the difference. The banks control something critical: the financial system. What's the critical system for the tech companies? The Internet. Tech companies don't control it, so they don't have as much leverage.

I'm just curious -- What do you want to do with your design/coding knowledge? I'm in the non-tech world and have the desire to learn for the sake of learning, but I also want to know what the hell I'm going to do with it!

"Keep in mind here that Chehadi was appointed by the US government, who has remained silent on this matter."
No, he wasn't. ICANN appoints its own President/CEO. There is no US confirmation of that position. None.

Basically everything beyond Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid is discretionary spending. If you get rid of those, then yes, military spending looks huge as a share of discretionary spending.
There are dozens of sites breaking down the spending (this is just another attempt at visualizing the data). A quick search led me to http://nationalpriorities.org/budget-basics/federal-budget-1... where you can find discretionary spending separated out on its own.
