on: As a VC, how is a $41 million investment in Color, justified?
You can't invest in the product -- not if it's really new, never seen before. You have no way to evaluate it, so you invest in the team. The team at Color has a proven track record; if the product is bogus, the will be able to pivot. Color is a good investment, but a little out of my price range.

It seems that the peak on the map is always one(arbitrary unit). The use of a logarithmic scale from one thousandth to one thousand; yet only using half of the scale seems disingenuous at best.

on: A funny and unorthodox way to encourage strong passwords
Make it a game:
* 1 point for each number
* 2 point for each letter
* 3 points for each symbol
* first of each class counts for five (caps count as a separate class)
"your password score is 32 points, which places you in the top 10 percent. User bschnier is ahead of you by 10 points."

I suspect the actual circumstances and the fact he doesn't remember are related.

XML is like violence. If you see too much of it early on, you will start to think it's normal. It will scar you for life.

Happens in Android browser, too. Whose bright idea was it that I didn't need to be able to read my phone without holding to my face, or stretch the screen so I can hit that tiny checkbox?

on: Why GIMP is Inadequate
Not really. The nice folks at Adobe would have you believe otherwise, but at low color depths, low image sizes, low skill levels; the difference isn't worth 5$, much less (googles) 999$ (before 100$ rebate. Unless you are making a lot of images, _and_ relying on them to make money, gimp is more than enough.

I just skip over the repeats. I'm still new here so I probably haven't read all of them. And, after all some things bear repeating.

on: Tell HN: Your social widgets are losing you visitors right now
I have my NoScript set to allow %site.com and *.%site.com by default. It leaves most sites usable, but blocks most of the bs. I only have to white list somethinsomethingCDN.com rarely. (less than five sites) That and googleapis, jquery, not much else. Read the docs and adjust the settings accordingly.
