on: Ask HN: Is there a tech talent shortage going on?
I think for a long time now, there have been more people with money and ideas than engineers who can build them. I don't think this status has changed much in the last few years.

on: What are your cost of living increases looking like this year?
I got given a 5% increase, but only because there's been an exodus and Management are terrified of losing critical mass.

on: Ask HN: What is the best money you have spent on professional development?
It's reasonably clear what this person is struggling to articulate, if we're being honest with ourselves. I've met a few like 'em before.

on: Ask HN: How to get a software developer job in Europe as an American?
^ This is likely a large component - hiring in foreign workers who will need visa support is a lot of effort and money. You may need to have a niche skill that cannot be found locally, for hiring you to be worth the additional expense over a local candidate.

on: Ask HN: Do Udacity nanodegrees get anyone a job without academic background?
Not true, I have personally witnessed candidates being rejected for senior (engineering, not management) positions due only to lack of college degree. Obviously idiotic, but it does happen.

on: I'm a sr sft eng from New Zealand, how do I move to the US?
L1/L2 visas are dual intent, if memory serves - you can absolutely apply for perm residency and citizenship using L1 as a starting point.
