I'm not able to get the audio sync right on my ipad 3rd gen. The audio starts about 15 seconds in.

g_lined | 13 years ago | on: What strips vocals from audio when a 1/8' audio jack is partially unplugged?

The difference in the signal in one channel will make the encoder throw away different parts of the audio compared to the other channel. This produces data loss in both the 'mono' portion of the signal and the 'stereo' part of the signal. So the 'mono' part of the signal (the vocal) ends up being different between the tracks since data loss is applied across the whole frequency range (or large chunks). Note that Joint Stereo has the same problem because the 'joint stereo-ness' only applies to the top part of the frequency spectrum.

Can you leave WPS off most of the time except for the initial connection of 'device A' to the network? Or will device A need it every time it switches on?

You're quite write that it should give you pause! I have, however, used this flag for 2 years now and it does work very well and have had no problems at all and that's over 2 versions of OS X.

My computer is an iMac and my server is an ubuntu server with a separate 2TB HDD in it for Timemachine.

Edited for spelling

Just to let you know, if someone complains they can't see the registration box it could be that they have Ghostery blocking everything as that blocks Facebook Connect. That results in no box being shown below the text.

g_lined | 15 years ago | on: Techniques To Simplify Sign-Ups and Log-Ins

A lot of the time I use a computer outside of work, I am alone in a house into which no one can see or I am alone in a house with my partner with whom I share all of my passwords. As such, I'd rather have the option of unmasking my password because it makes things easier for me. I use long passwords and so it's not rare (though neither common) for me to type it wrong so I end up typing my 'password' 4 or 6 times.

g_lined | 15 years ago | on: Why the password "this is fun" is 10 times more secure than "J4fS!2"

Because it's not true! Or at least not the way it was explained. The reason to change your password is to avoid the vector of attack where someone gets your password and can therefore use it against you. If you change your password each month, you limit the damage the person can do to whatever they can achieve in that month. Similarly if they have your username and don't have your password, they only have a month to try as many combinations as they can.

To say that is is 'the only way' is certainly not true. However, it does help in these circumstances and that's why it is a method which is used - mostly in companies as far as I can tell.

Thanks. I watched the video only after reading your comment. I found something new about fructose so it was worth it. I personally am turned off by his presentation style. He tries to hard to convince me of his conclusion, too rhetorically and indeed before he had presented his reasons. Nevertheless I feel that the theory of what he presented is pretty much right and the only question appears to be to what degree you agree with his conclusions.

This is fairly simply explained: * There is one unit of measurement, SAR * There are two maximum permissible values; one for the US, one for the EU * Apple has chosen the higher of the two so they can make a better phone (more power) * They get away with going over the US legal limit by recommending you hold it further away than normal

It should be noted that not only are the max SAR values different for the EU and US but they are measured differently so can't really be compared directly.

I see what you're saying and it's an important point to remember, but rather than one way be wrong, I think it depends on the question. "I need to get from New York to L.A. Which is the safest way to do it?" is about comparing two travel methods (or three if you want to think about trains) for the same distance. The time based answer is suited to your vacation quandary where you have a week off and you wonder whether to drive somewhere or fly someplace else.

Since dB is, by definition, a relative term it's no surprise you were confused since there is not anything for it to relate to. The best I can guess is that they mean to say 80dB(A) which relates the sound to a certain air pressure. The value is then weighted to approximate how an ear would respond. 80dB(A) has been likened to standing around 26ft from busy traffic or being 2 feet away from an alarm clock (bell or buzzer not specified).

g_lined | 15 years ago | on: Why is it cloud everything now?

Misuse aside, cloud computing (storage or otherwise) is in its infancy so everyone is trying their own take. Its real use will become apparent. In the 1980s everything had a clock in it because suddenly LCD screens were small enough to put a clock into anything the size of a pen or bigger. Now we've moved on and realised that it's not /clocks/ we wanted to be small, but chips. We'll move on from 'in the cloud' but in its wake will be left something useful.
