125k at FAANG is base. With bonus and RSUs that becomes 160k+.

140k is a very low offer for someone with 10 years. Offers like that are typically made by desperate startups.

Seniority is assessed by skills and not tenure. Requirements for senior positions are pretty stiff in Bay Area. Seniors need to deliver regarless of circumstances.

Mid-engineer is someone who can accomplish all tasks with occasional design-level guidance. Senior is someone who can accomplish complex tasks without any guidance.

Lead is a senior engineer.

The numbers for 125k indeed do not add up. However mid-level in Bay Area is 200k+ and Senior is 300k+. Not sure where 125k comes from.

Finding people with skills expexted for Bay Area’s mid level (forget about Director or VP) is a massive challenge.

Can you take a story given in a book as the truth without examination after prose was denied place in the Republic?

In Bay Area the situation with public schools is pretty dire, in my oppinion. Palo Alto, Cupertino and Los Gatos are ok. The rest are surviving.

Housing in districts where public schools are ok comes at a massive premium. The difference between San Jose and Los Gatos is more than 300k.

Private schools are 2-3k per month.

To afford Bay Area both parents have to work 50+ hours a week with 30+ minute commutes. As a result, the time parents spend with children is very limited. Raising a famility with even 2 children is a big challenge.

Cost of my childrens’ education will much more than $180k. Daycare is 70-80k then private school is 300k+. Public schools are in a very sad state.

Children are a true luxury in this day and age.
