Sorry, could I ask which talk you are referring to?

Thanks for the link! One nice thing about the original post is that it runs inside of a Swift playground, which, for those with Xcode (or an iPad) can be a fast way of learning and experimenting. I could see someone starting with this project and then easily expanding their knowledge by modifying it using resources like the one you linked to.

Tokyo iOS Meetup organizer here. The place where we meet is a company called Voyage Group, which is actually a proper company rather than a co-working space. It is unique in that, as I understand it, it is made up mostly of small, wholly-owned subsidiary companies, which is why there are all of those different-sized rooms. You are right that it would be good for co-working, too.

Co-working spaces have definitely expanded in the past couple years though. Co-ba in Shibuya and Hub Tokyo in Meguro are two that I have visited that seemed like they had good communities.

I actually a similar thought, the other day. (I have worked a lot on international programming teams). What if there were programming languages in which the language had keywords which could change depending on locale? Maybe variable names could be localized? And comments could be translatable so that the programmers would be able to see their native language inline?

In international teams, I wonder if this could aid developer productivity throughout the team?

I think he is talking about the localization of code itself (in the case of Android, the Java that the app is written in), not the localization of the user interface element, etc. that the user sees.

Imagine a programming language in which the keywords, for example, could change based on the user's language settings.

I agree. I've been working in the startup scene in Japan for the past couple years (and at GREE, one of the companies which is mentioned in the article). I have met a lot of very enthusiastic young entrepreneurs, but I am not yet sure that there is a big enough crowd of people with that mentality to call it "New Japan." He makes it sound as though there has been an entire generational shift.

I have been there the past several times (and will be attending this one as well). I have been able to do some like-minded people and I have done some networking. Mostly, though, it was just a fun social time talking about all sorts of various technical stuff. I would definitely recommend coming out if you have the time.

gillygize | 14 years ago | on: SOPA lives—and MPAA calls protests an "abuse of power"

That is a good point, and I agree with your argument that this boycott is a significant turning point for Wikipedia and other websites. If we think about the reason that the boycott exists, however, which is the danger that this legislation will allow Wikipedia to be taken offline without adequate recourse, then suggesting that "it is possible that someone somewhere" will die because of the blackout could similarly lead to an argument like, "if SOPA is passed, it is possible that someone somewhere will die" due to the Wikipedia (or some other website) being taken offline.

I am glad I will finally be able to attend this time! For several consecutive months now, this meetup was always scheduled sometime when I had another engagement.

How many people usually come to one of these meetups, and how many are regulars?
