gkelly | 8 years ago | on: Ask HN: In what creative ways are you using Makefiles?

I use Makefiles that run "git push $branch" and then call a Jenkins API to start a build/deploy of that $branch. This way I never have to leave vim; I use the fugitive plugin for vim to "git add" and "git commit", then run ":make".

gkelly | 11 years ago | on: Long Island Weather Observer Sets U.S. Record With 84-Year Streak

I'm not a volunteer observer, but I am the lead developer on the web app they now use to enter the observation data. The app is a result of the 'paperless' initiative the NWS (and NCDC) has. The person on the other end of his phone call is probably using this web app I work on.

gkelly | 12 years ago | on: Ask HN: How many vacations do you take a year?

Where I work (state government in the US), I accrue 2 vacation days per month. I have about 30 days in the bank. I'm going to take the next six months and travel the world with my wife, while working remotely. I am going to work at 50% of full-time and use my vacation days so I only work about 40 hours per month. My wife and I saved money, vacation days, and credit card points for about 2 years for this trip.
