on: Productivity and the Workweek (2000)
This sounds awesome. I'm held back a bit, I have always been warned against working less than a full workweek, since it would presumely substantially harm my (European) retirement build-up (unless I would make a lot more money than I currently do). I have never investigated yet, but would before cutting working hours.

on: LaTeX Workflow on iPad
Some years ago I read an article through HN by someone who did their programming on an ipad through SSH (and bluetooth mac keyboard) and ditched the laptop. Pictures of croissants in the sun outside in Munich. Got me very inspired.
But in the end I decided on a stationary box at work/home, and a MB Air for when not at the desk (or on the sofa). Works great and doesn't weigh much anyway. The main problem with the tablet was that were always things I was missing that I hadn't thought about when moving to iPad. Maybe it'd be better with another brand, but I'm not bothering now.

on: Pmarca Guide to Personal Productivity (2007)
I dont think an anti to-do list makes me more productive. But I sure like to keep a log of things done in a text file so I can find what I did later. There is of course a limit to what I keep, but even one-liners etc can be stored in it. Especially when used seldomly, I dont remember all the bash tools invocations. And no, I wont "tear it up and throw it away".

I have nostalgia for my early adopter friend's setup. He had his mp3 player (a jazpiper?) connected to a fake cassette for playing in his car.

It took me the longest time before I understood that ad, since the sheep speaks fluent "American".
While on pronounciation topics, how does one pronounce "Knuth"? Is the k silent like in "know"?
Edit: According to Wikipedia it is kə-NOOTH.

I guess in earlier days they used the form they found appropriate and didnt think about it much more. Also, as much as you and I like it, the gender-neutral pronoun in swedish is relatively modern enough for it to be yet hardly used in everyday communication (YMMV of course).

I have to try this. But how does it work out for you when you "have to" be up late, e.g. at social activities? I imagine yawning my way through a late dinner, falling asleep at the cinema.

Thank you, I had to scroll down to this comment to realize why people cared about fountain pens. I think I have without knowing it preferred pencils, and the use/availability ratio of pens in my home/workplace is so low that I have never thought of buying one.

on: The Accidental Elitist: Academia is too important to be left to academics
If you think species names are whimsical, wait until you see the list of Drosophila (fruit fly) gene names.
edit: I am not sure species names should be systematical either, as long as they are differently named. Molecules up to a certain complexity can be named by their formula. Species have far greater complexity yet.

on: Talking to Boys the Way We Do to Girls
I'm not big and strong, and definitely not "very cool", and my child sample size is 5 times smaller than yours, so I wouldn't know by experience, but I agree on the missing link between communication differences and bullying, and indeed boys and girls may well have different brains and needs, on average.
The article doesn't make that point, but kids with communication needs more into the other gender's distribution also exists. I would say as you do, look at your kids, treat them according to their needs. Outcomes are of course fairly unpredicatable in any case. I guess there is always the possibility that a parent's behaviour before children express their need clearly can steer the children's behaviour.
I do wonder about cultural differences. Hyperbolically, I find US masculinity as different from say its Norwegian version as I find girls from boys.

I was under the impression that dailies were an elaborate scam, as they were identical to monthly contacts except for price. Have been wearing my dailies as monthlies but maybe I should research this a little bit more.

I am not arguing against your point, but are there reports which are not 20+ years old?
Also, my understanding of the words may be wrong but I didn't see anyone _justifying_ rape in this thread.

on: How to Avoid a Post-Antibiotic World
No expert, but theoretically new mutations that eliminate resistance may be beneficial by allowing the newly mutated bacteria to outgrow the resistant ones if the mutation leads to spending less energy.
Edit: there will also be non-resistant bacteria in the population so the mutation to remove resistance may not even be necessary.
