on: Five-year-old passes Microsoft exam
Obviously i wasn't advocating the opposite extreme of telling a kid to do thing just to 'fit in', kids should be encouraged to have a healthy curiosity towards their interests.
My point was that parents should have in mind that when they send their kids off to college at the age of 12, or in this case let them take tests that are suited for 22 years olds they are likely doing more harm then good.
Often parents get excited by the fuzzy feel of my kid is a genius, but forget what damage they are really doing.

The lack of normal social life from being a geek in the eyes of other kids will likely do the kid more damage then the benefit he will receive from being a child computer wiz.
Let kids be kids and don't try to make them adults early, it usually doesn't turn out to be as glorified as the adults think it will.

on: The two things that could hurt Google
This is particularly annoying because it would appear from that statement that google is sexists and racist.
Start with 'mostly male' anyone and everyone in the tech world knows that most software engineers are male. So whats google to do hire many more female engineers who are less qualified just so they have equal female representation?!
Regarding the white part 61% is less then the overall us white population representation (63%), so what exactly is the issue here?

on: Google, you win
No offense, but your case sounds somewhat similar to patent trolls. "Spread the word" is your trade mark, huh?!
What's next you guys gonna trade mark the word "Dear" and sue anyone who starts their email with that word?

on: Ask HN: How Do I Become A 'Good' Programmer... Like Everyone Else Here
Great response Igor. This is pretty much how i try to stay up to date. The thing i find frustrating is when you finally become really good at technology often there is already a new out there which you are totally clueless in and feel like you are back to being a junior.
Being a programmer for an average intelligent person feels like you are constantly chasing your own tail...

on: A story about a man who outsourced his own job
I personally employ other developers for side projects and they get paid significantly below what i get paid at my 9-5. If i was dishonest i could pretty easily pull off this scam.
Not as extreme as doing 0 but i could have 80% of my work done and just review and commit..

on: There's A Gold-Dispensing ATM on West 57th Street
Problem is as soon as you buy it you lose money. The reason being that if you want to sell it back you must go to a dealer he will low ball you and you will have a hard time getting the actual value of the gold.
It is not like $100 bill that you could just spend on whatever you want, you are stuck with something that in order to cash out you must take a cut by selling it to a dealer.

on: 0xDBE: JetBrains IDE for DBAs and SQL developers
Fair comparison, but the difference is that we generally can get the hammers and saws free online.
Choosing to pay for these products shows that they are superior to the other free ones which are available to us, and the paid ones can also be obtained for free if one chooses to do so (yes i know its illegal and wrong but its very common and easy).

on: 0xDBE: JetBrains IDE for DBAs and SQL developers
JetBrains make the best IDEs on the market, their products always surpass my expectations. I use their python IDE and the php IDE both fantastic products that are well worth the money(and i HATE paying for software).
No i don't work for them and i am not affiliated with them i just happen to appreciate their amazing software.

Examples usually show you how do things like a parrot, but you don't get the idea of why these things happen as they do without some documentation.

on: A LaTeX Resume Template that fits everything AND looks good
As someone who actually conducts interviews i must agree with you. I recently interviewed a girl who was actually very talented but her resume looked very much like the one in the link (maybe she actually got it off of there).
I looked at her resume and thought in my head this is one the worst looking resumes i have ever seen.
I did recommend hiring the girl because she was a talented developer, but the resume looked hideous.
