Jack presents good advice that still is an important part of culture in certain sectors and within certain types of businesses if you want to move up the corporate ladder. He says to work hard but also to work smart, I don't think he's saying number of hours worked or level of brown nosing positively correlates to return on efforts or dollars. You must have a career strategy and not just be a hamster running around a wheel. Work hard at that strategy and whether it means being promoted up the ladder every year in the same company or to deliver on something groundbreaking and then exiting within a couple years or less. In other news, I wonder how Jack and Tim Ferriss would get along.

A smart, young, relatable person of the next generation to grow the company. Looking forward to seeing what Sam's got under his sleeves. Has Sam done anything in the entrepreneurial world after Loopt was acquired? Or has he just been an investor?

I agree. The new PayPal wallet app that just launched recently is fitting for an older generation and could be improved 100x with Venmo. It will be interesting to see how they will fold Venmo into the current PayPal app, or would it make more sense to keep them as separate apps? I think the latter makes more sense.

This sucks for Canada. Less than five years ago RIM/BlackBerry's share prices were trading at ~$150, now it's $10! I can see this depressing Canadian start-ups and its tech industry. Like Kodak, the main reasons for BB's downfall was their own human mistakes - complacency, hubris, and arrogance.

I was going by a woman's US dress size. This would equate to a woman's Large and approx. 32" waist. For men, the average suit size is now a US 44.

gummify | 12 years ago | on: The Obesity Era

I saw on the news today that 70% of the US is a size 14 or larger now. Shocking. In addition to the need for sugar and starch reduction, a lot of grocery foods are not as natural as we think they are. Having lived in European and Asian countries I can say that the people there are less calorie conscious and sometimes eat more than Americans do but their food options and ingredients seem more wholesome and less processed than in North America. Is it worthwhile to investigate who controls the health standards in manufacturing of food?

It would have been interesting to see Waze remain independent and as an alternative map solution. With 34 million users, it could have been a very profitable business for the long-run.

gummify | 12 years ago | on: Loom (YC W12) Is Building A Better iCloud

you can upload data over wifi or cellular network. It won't take up space on your device, i.e. 10GB of photos/videos from your library will just be 300mb on your iPhone.

gummify | 12 years ago | on: Loom (YC W12) Is Building A Better iCloud

The bigger problem we're solving is not just photos, it's being able to access and edit content fluidly and seamlessly across devices and on any screen. We're starting with photos and videos as they take up most space on your devices/computer.

gummify | 12 years ago | on: Flickr, I'm disappointed. The truth about the free terabyte.

The 1TB is definitely real. They had unlimited storage before for pro users. The fine print was confusing (i.e. max 300mb uploads per month). But I guess consumers now favour an actual measurable number (1TB) than unlimited. Flickr is a social community, not sure how reliable it is a backup solution. Good question though. Recently in the news they accidentally had some user's private photos as public :S
