As someone who uses Chime, I’m working on switching to other banks. It’s a nice starter digital bank but their savings rate has lagged most other banks and I’m not sure what killer features they have that SoFi/Ally/etc. don’t also offer now.

Best wishes to those affected, I’m sure there’s a lot of talent that won’t have trouble finding something new.

> An Indiana man charged with carrying a loaded firearm to the Capitol on Jan. 6 told investigators that if he had found Speaker Nancy Pelosi, “you’d be here for another reason,” according to court documents posted over the weekend.

> Mark Mazza, 56, is the latest of about half a dozen Jan. 6 defendants charged with bringing a gun to the Capitol. In this case, Mazza allegedly carried a Taurus revolver known as “The Judge,” which is capable of firing shotgun shells — two of which were in the chamber, along with three hollow-point bullets. A Capitol Police sergeant obtained the weapon after allegedly fending off an assault from Mazza.

The cease and desist, if anyone is interested in reading it: https://louisbarclay.notion.site/Unfollow-Everything-cease-a...

The one that sticks out to me is:

> Interfering with or impairing the intended operation of Facebook

This seems very broad. I am sure Facebook has some legal standing for the takedown based on their terms of use and the extension's data collection. I wonder how far you can stretch "impairing the intended operation of Facebook", though.

> NPR reported on Tuesday that Purdue Pharma and its attorneys launched a behind-the-scenes pressure campaign aimed at convincing the DOJ not to challenge the plan in court.

> NPR acquired an early draft of a letter distributed by the drug company to groups supportive of the bankruptcy deal.

> The letter is framed as a direct appeal to DOJ officials and purports to be written by those injured by the company and members of the Sackler family.

> "We collectively speak for the overwhelming majority of the state and local governments, organizations, and individuals harmed by Purdue and the Sacklers," the letter states.

> There is no mention in the document of the company's role launching the effort or crafting the message.

Not shocking that the group largely responsible for the opioid crisis would lie like this, but still disgusting. I'm hoping the DOJ appeals.

> I know it’s been a long day and that many of you probably haven’t slept in 24 hours. We know that the days to come will be filled with the screeching voices of the minority.

> Our commitment to lift up kids who have lived through the most unimaginable abuse and victimizations will be stronger.

Ah, yes, everyone that is vocally concerned about this is either misinformed or irrationally “screeching.” We, of course, are righteous defenders of children. Tighten those blinders, Team Apple!

gwilikers | 4 years ago | on: No More Movies

There is so much more to film than story, but story seems to be the author's focus (especially with point #3 and the Lynch footnote.) At a movie every 5 days for 11 years, though, I can't blame the author for burning out.

> "Mark" offline? Why not just terminate it? And why do we care if build nodes come and go? These should be cattle, not pets. If they all die at once, that's bad. If they're cycling in and out, that's business as usual.

Given that they are for mobile builds, there might be some macOS nodes in there for iOS builds. These might be in-house machines they maintain -- or, if they use a cloud provider, there might be costs to just killing and spinning up nodes. For example, for EC2 Mac instances:

> EC2 Mac instances are available for purchase as Dedicated Hosts through On Demand and Savings Plans pricing models. Billing for EC2 Mac instances is per second with a 24-hour minimum allocation period to comply with the Apple macOS Software License Agreement.

gwilikers | 5 years ago | on: It Doesn't Work

"It doesn't work" issues are bad for all the reasons described in the article, but the ones that really boggle the mind are the _demands_ people think they can make of maintainers they have zero leverage over.

My favorite in recent history was a developer (who had never made any contributions to the repo, nor even filed the original issue) saying something to the effect of "if this issue is not resolved shortly, we will move our company to use a different software." Talk about threatening the maintainers with a good time.

> we have a mechanism for people who are truly assholes - be tolerant and ignore them.

Why does the GP feel they can convey their criticisms to other parties as callously as they please, but reject that anyone should respond to them negatively?

gwilikers | 5 years ago | on: Mediocrity Is Now Mandatory

Reading this, all I can think is that you are just asking for everyone to spare your feelings while insisting you shouldn't put in the effort to spare anyone else's.

> I know it sounds a bit dramatic but there really is a class war going on. [...] Your life, your child’s life, your mother, your loved one depends on how much money you make. The government and Pharma companies aren’t going to help you when you can’t afford it either.

> If one were to replicate the experiment from scratch, the total individual cost would end up being around $3500, the major costs being $1600 for DNA synthesis and $1200 for the kits to measure coronavirus spike protein antibodies.

Ah yes, fighting the good fight by spending several thousand dollars of disposable income on your hobby, to show people that the government-subsidized vaccine is class violence. :)
