By the time I could afford an iPod, they had discontinued the classic, so I got the Sony A50.

Doesn't feel as nostalgic but does the job. Also acts as a Bluetooth receiver and USB DAC

gymshoes | 4 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do I get fit and healthy as a software engineer?

I replaced my desk and chair with a standing desk and a walking treadmill. I get at least 2 hours of walking per day out of it and it's benefited me a lot.

No longer have back pain and it just keeps the mind fresh throughout the day.

It took a bit of getting used to, but I can now type without making many errors. I walk at 2 km/h

Due to getting a bit of activity at the beginning of the day also makes me motivated to go out for a run in the evening.

you also need to take care of that burnout. Take a break, spend some time to recover and then get into the habit of moving throughout the day. Use a pomodoro timer to remind you of taking breaks

gymshoes | 5 years ago | on: Is Dark Mode Such a Good Idea?

I just use the mode that works better in different applications.

I prefer sepia background for reader mode and ebooks. Night themes always for text editors.

It also matters a lot on when the room is brightly lit or not.

Most non-fiction books that I've started and quit reading before 25% was because they felt like the content that could fit in a blog post had been stretched to over 300 pages.

I've found that summaries can give you quite a good idea of what the book is about in most cases. I read the full book if the summary interests me.

gymshoes | 7 years ago | on: PayPal has permanently banned The Hacker News and hold funds for 180 days

It probably is.

A few months ago I was making a news ticker with headlines sourced from hnrss. I had used 'security' as a keyword and posts with score above 100.

I was looking for other sources that provide security news and stumbled upon this one too. What I saw was all posts looked quite similar to the rss filter from hnrss, except all articles were re-written in a slightly different way.

It was all just redundant news from the hnrss feed and other popular security bloggers.

gymshoes | 7 years ago | on: Designing cities to counter loneliness? Let's explore the possibilities

In the locality where I lived, families had been living for years in the same house as they own the houses. Everybody in the neighbourhood knew each other.

Now most of those families have sold off their homes and they were turned into apartments by the builders.

Now people don't even know the people who live in the floor above theirs.

I'm agnostic towards the medium if instruction but if I'm a little familiar with something, I would take a reputed book or official docs over video courses.

However, if I get too perplexed by something and need hand-holding to understand something, I look for videos.

Also, videos help in cases with libraries whose documentations are lacking or don't have docs regarding integration with something.

The things the author mentions are very similar to the things a friend of mine said when he started his first business. He was 23 then and now 25. I showed him this blog post and he told me that was a very inexperienced age for him then and that was the phase when he used to have a lot of beliefs that are now changed.

He's from India too.
