This is one of the conversations where the difference between English and British actually matters. I don't think you're talking about the small number of English people living in Northern Ireland here are you? And I'm pretty sure the UK is the one that might mess up the deal rather than England (don't forget Wales voted to leave too).

I strongly recommend reading "So Good They Can't Ignore You" by Cal Newport. It's full of good ideas but one of the key insights is about spending time building up career capital and then leveraging that to get what you really want.

I don't think anyone else has said this but it's worth noting that most coding jobs don't involve many hours of being alone. I've been in the industry full time since I graduated (a little over ten years ago) and it's been non-stop meetings and people asking for help and spending time with customers and mentoring and demo days and offsites and brainstorming...

Each to their own of course but it seems to me, there's better places for all of that. If there's logic or design that's complicated and not properly commented or documented, then that's worth doing and sharing with the team.

Work done for the day for me is typically captured in commits or bug updates - that way my colleagues can easily take over if I win the lottery or are suddenly taken ill.

And stuff I learn is learned, so I don't need to write that down :-)

Working in a team, shared information is critical and logbooks just aren't the best way to achieve that.
