In my experience I think it helps a ton with non-verbal communication. I would never demand someone have their camera on apart from interviews/important conversations. But I can visibly see if someone is confused/engaged/understanding if I can physically see them and I think there's something too that.

Yes and no. There are many repeat actions in SC but at peak they can definitely reach that high. Microing units while simultaneously performing larger macro actions at the same time is a staple of any decent player and is really obvious at the higher levels. I personally play on an average of 100-120 APM for the game but regularly see 200+ in Platinum/Diamond.

heywot | 6 years ago | on: Schools Are Deploying Digital Surveillance Systems

This is a really dismal view of homeschooling that I don't really understand. Are there bad situations with homeschooling? Absolutely! Are there bad situations in public schools? Absolutely! One is not inherently better than the other.

Maybe myself, my siblings, and our many homeschooled friends are just abnormalities, but we have never had issues embracing society, understanding it, and we never needed to have "fix" our parent's influence later in life. Do I know kids that struggled with that? Sure. You want to know where else I see kids deal with all the issues you mentioned? Public school. Lots of 'em.

I don't know if you were homeschooled as a kid and had a bad experience, know someone who did, or are just spouting the typical "homeschooling is bad! they have no social abilities!" arguments I hear constantly. But I would encourage you to maybe challenge that perspective. Homeschooling can be a wonderful tool and equip kids in ways that public schools are simply not able to. It takes a ton of work. It's not for everyone. But to say it is inherently a lesser education and experience than public schools just doesn't line up.

I realize we're discussing this on HN but developers are a small microcosm of the communities being listed. Sure, there's examples that might combat the generality of my statement...but let's not be pedantic when that wasn't the subject to begin with.

I can work remotely with a very basic internet connection. So can others. And you can be a successful developer (in your country, let alone your county) without working remotely.

heywot | 7 years ago | on: Thieves boosting signal from key fobs inside homes to steal vehicles

I got myself in a bad situation where I set my key fob on the top of my car after a run, changed, jumped into the car, and got onto the highway before realizing my mistake. The fob fell onto the road and was run over and destroyed before I could get to it. Thankfully I left my car running during this time and was still able to get home.

The way it works is reasonable. Maybe tighten up the proximity. But honestly, I miss my classic keys.

Or they know their limits.

I, for one, have refused to purchase a sport bike on numerous occasions - including my "dream bike" - because I know its too much bike and that might get me into trouble. I've never felt that way about any of my cruisers or dirt bikes.

heywot | 7 years ago | on: What Makes .NET Core So Special?

We utilize EF Core on a fairly large project and have had zero issues mapping to views. I doubt there are issues at this point with SPs either though I haven't personally done that.

EF Core has a lot of work that needs to be done (and features brought over) but for a lot of use cases, it works just dandy. I don't disagree with your comments about incompatibilities and restrictions - just wanted to set the record straight.

heywot | 7 years ago | on: Am I logged in or not? GDPR case study on the example of Chrome browser change

I've been considering switching over to Firefox after being a day-one adopter of Chrome and this helped become a tipping point to get me to switch over. Though, full disclosure: I've been working to limit Google services in my day-to-day life (Maps, Gmail, and now Chrome) in the last couple of months over privacy concerns.

heywot | 7 years ago | on: T-Mobile Database Breach Exposes 2M Customers' Data

I get your conclusion but that doesn't excuse T-Mobile from notifying customers that their data has potentially been breached. I would much rather be aware that there is a distinct possibility my cell carrier's data on me because I can take some small actions to mitigate any potential damage (change password, update pin, etc). Being aware is half the battle with online security.

I'm not sure that the lack of repercussions is a reasonable excuse. I know companies will use it. I know we might throw our hands in the air and just say its a fact of life. But it doesn't have to be.

heywot | 7 years ago | on: T-Mobile Database Breach Exposes 2M Customers' Data

My favorite part about all of this is that, as a T-Mobile customer, this is how I find out about the leak. There's not even an alert when I log into my account. Why can't companies be more responsible about these situations?

heywot | 8 years ago | on: Nintendo’s Resurgence

I'm not sure if you played Breath of the Wild or Odyssey but I don't think they're mining nostalgia with the Switch. There are certainly callbacks but those games are as fresh and as impressive as I've seen in my ~20 years of gaming. YMMV, of course...but I have really been impressed with Nintendo's approach to refining gameplay and genre.

The Switch has seen some pretty decent third party support on the Switch (Doom, Rocket League w/Crossplay, FIFA, NBA, Elder Scrolls) that haven't really been around in prior generations. It seems like indie games are flooding to the Switch. We'll see if large third party support sticks around but I think as long as the games sell, people will port/develop for the Switch.

I love Nintendo's approach this generation. I've really enjoyed diving into their games after barely playing the Wii and completely skipping the Wii U. This definitely feels like a resurgence - but obviously we'll see in 6-12 months. But they're definitely back on everyone's radar.

heywot | 8 years ago | on: Student Loan Debt Is Now as Big as the U.S. Junk Bond Market

Which is a really frustrating thing. I have family members who didn't go to college who could not pursue certain careers (or, struggled to advance their careers) because they don't have piece of paper - even if it had nothing to do with the career itself. In tech it has become less of an issue but I would love to see this go away for everyone.

Being able to get a four year degree does not signal that a potential employee is better than someone that doesn't. Especially the way higher education has gone in my lifetime.
