I doubt this comment will go over well, but I'll mention this small but important cultural fact anyway: Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints no longer refer to themselves as Mormons or Latter-Day Saints. Only Saints.

It may seem like minutia, but Saints (of whom I am one of them) worship Christ. Mormon, on the other hand, is one of many mortal prophets from ancient Americas and also the editor/compiler of the Book of Mormon.

If you know just that alone, it'll probably score you points with the Saints that you meet. :)

hymnsfm | 5 years ago | on: Surgical Reading: How to Read 12 Books at Once

Every year I try to read 100 books, and up to a dozen in tandem. I've succeeded the past few years, but this year I'm a bit doubtful as I've taken on "Why You Like It: The Science and Culture of Musical Taste", a 720 page behemoth.

My unsolicited advice for how to read 100 books a year, while still working full-time and fulfilling other important life-roles? Don't watch YouTube/TV/movies and minimize time spent reading articles. Have Alexa read kindle e-books to you when you're on the go. And if you aren't enjoying a book, drop it and find something you can tear through.

No I haven't yet. Thanks for making me aware of it and pointing me to that thread.

hymnsfm | 5 years ago | on: Do the Real Thing

True. I wouldn't have known I don't have the competency to sight-sing if I didn't try it first. That said, doing the "real thing" is out of my reach until I level up in other areas.

hymnsfm | 5 years ago | on: Do the Real Thing

Possibly an over-simplification. Take this example: I want to sight-sing hymns. I know a bit of music theory but it's been cobbled together over the past year in an haphazard fashion. I pick up a hymnal to sing the first hymn and immediately need to look up the key signature (I never memorized them). Then I see the hymn is 12/8 time and realize I only superficially covered rhythm and time signatures. I go on YouTube to refresh my memory. This is before being able to sing a single note.

When I do attempt to sing, my mind's ear says I'm way off (even when I've never heard the hymn before). I'm not hitting the notes. So now I need to learn solfège and music intervals.

Doing the "real thing" requires having the tools and basic skillset first. I suggest the opposite of this article: break the goal down into manageable parts and work the periphery. Get some small wins. Then you can realistically take on the "real thing". There may be no other way.

It was a permalink issue. I thought I posted the wrong url and hastily deleted. My mistake.

I suggest reading the Book of Mormon. It's a fascinating record of the peoples of ancient America, specifically the Nephites, Lamanites and Jaredites. Where these civilizations lived and fought (there are lots of battles in the book) is uncertain, but it's believed to be mainly Central and South America.

Keep in mind that The Book of Mormon is a primarily a spiritual book: another testament of Jesus Christ. The Lord expects readers to accept the book on faith. When the time is right, the Spirit will testify of its truthfulness and the Lord will bring forth further evidence. For some, this recent discovery is further evidence.

hymnsfm | 5 years ago | on: Ask HN: I implemented the life I designed: perfect but I feel lost. What now?

Look at the spiritual dimension of your life. The spiritual realm goes far beyond this brief mortal existence.

Pray to God in the name of Jesus Christ. It will require faith at first. But if you have a real intent to know, and are willing to listen and make changes, you'll get the answers you need.

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." ~Prov. 3:5-6

I told him I was sorry he had to put up with her behaviour. What I didn't say, but implied, was I was sorry he was treated like a lesser person for no other reason he looked different and was possibly an immigrant.

On an even deeper unconscious level, I was probably apologising on behalf of most Canadians who accept (if not embrace) people of racial and cultural diversity.

The reason he didn't respond wasn't because of something I said. We were both kind of gobsmacked at what happened.

I'm a white middle aged man who lives in Canada. Late one night I went to a nearby gas station to pick up some snacks. The attendant, a young man of Pakistani origin, gave me a friendly greeting which I returned.

A moment later a woman in her mid-twenties entered and immediately started criticising the attendant. She asked where something was and he calmly walked over and pointed to it, but she didn't seem to care. She just berated him more.

That's when I clued-in to her unprovoked hostility. I told her she was extremely rude and to leave. She left without buying anything.

I paid for my snacks and apologized to him for her behaviour. He looked completely deflated from the experience and said nothing. I left the gas station feeling sad and stunned at what I just witnessed first-hand.

It's a good day to visit Hacker News. Lots of interesting and insightful submissions, including this one.

I especially get a kick out of creative domain names. This is one of my favorites.
