The title of the article was "4 reasons why we are leaving Dropbox" and not "10 alternatives to Dropbox", which would be an interesting, but totally different article on it's own. It is good to read about these issues, as these days many people think about moving from A to B in cloud storage.

Personally i moved all my storage, contacts and calendars over to a self-hosted owncloud instance, which i did not regret so far. But i'm not going to write an article about it ...

This is an app to guide you through the entire process of Design Thinking in an (interactive) online course.

It was originally build as an iPad Webapp. Now i ported it to the web to see if there is any response and interest in this app.

For now it's only in german. I am planning in proper refactoring an l18n if there is a good amount of (positive) response.

Looks really cool. And i love Python. However, I think the Python Syntax will make it hard to minify the code, which is probably not that important anyway when not in production. But for production usage it would be cool to have a real compiler instead of an interpreter.

But yeah. Cool stuff.

jachwe | 13 years ago | on: How we send a morning email to users around the world.

I would prefer a settings page where i can opt in oder out for certain mailings (if not mandatory) and set the timesettings myself.

Relying on the header information might lead to wrong results as some people changed settings and it relies on the browser. (Though i guess thats not valid for many users)

But while you're there, one can also set time to receive emails themself. Maybe i want to have it earlier because half of my tasks already need to be done by 7am.

Of course, the best is to combine both, having a settings page with default value gathered from the browser.

Nice article which really covers the problem many people aren't thinking about.

i like the approach.

also (in webkit) you can use an svg data url in your css mask-image to eliminate the extra request. works like a charme for all elements.

Awesome. This looks really good. How is the performance with many elements?

Since i first used yahoo pipes, years ago, i have a project in mind where i could use exactly this functionality.

I was always to lazy to give it a shot on my own, but i think now would be the right time. I'll keep you updated.

Thank you.

jachwe | 14 years ago | on: Phantom cell phone vibration (or I am not going insane after all)

I know this to well. This and how i always check for the Mailnotification in my Dock if there is any little background sound in the musictrack i'm listening to.

But it's not about addiction i suppose. It's a natural behaviour of our brain to save energy by recognizing patterns instead of recomputing. So yes, the tech break will help, but no, i am not addicted to my phone.

(edited a typo)

jachwe | 14 years ago | on: Leap: A new gesture based interface for devices

Motions like using a mouse or a keyboard are not a single bit more intuitive for flying planes or shootings guns. It just an issue of familiarisation with the interface as it was with the mouse, as it was the keyboard.

Beside that, it really doesn't matter as these were only two examples of a large variety of possible applications. If it doesn't fit the need - don't use it. There are other interfaces. There is no need for one interface to rule them all but for interfaces that really hits the spot for particular applications.

Regarding Leap: Looks really promising. Though i would prefere if it would be "hidden". Anyhow, can't wait to get my on it. Or over it.

jachwe | 14 years ago | on: Facebook Stops You From Posting ‘Irrelevant Or Inappropriate’ Comments

@nikcub I think it's not a coincidence.

In fact FB declines Post and Messages for a while already. For example you can't post or comment and include a picture from imgur, while it (obviously) fine from other hosts. Thats what i experienced so far, but i can imagine there are other examples.

That does not need to be censorship. Might be that they got an agreement about not hotlinking or hosting imgur images for copyright reasons.
