on: Burn-out, daunting work, overstretched, and it's just too much
I second this recommendation. I eschew self-help book but I made an exception for this because I found an audiobook version that I could rent from my local library (via Libby). The content and the quality of the narration is excellent on that.

Would you have a recommendation for a good English language translation for Yog Darshan by Patanjali?

on: Tuesday was my last day as CEO of CircleUp
For context I am a developer in the Silicon Valley. The more I see around me and our nation at large, the more I am forming the opinion that greed is THE defining attribute of our time. The way the economy and society is structured, there is absolutely no breathing room left for anyone to perform any activity except to exist in the service of a paycheck. Why? because of greed. Because of greed and the blindness it brings with it, any attempts to build even a slightly more benign economic arrangement gets immediately labeled as "socialist" or some such. Not to mention the absolute beating our natural environment and habitat is taking in the process of servicing this greed to accumulate as much as you possibly can.

No, not in the least. But you do then question the context which allows a few to accumulate so much wealth while simultaneously observing a significant proportion of the population with stagnant levels of wealth.

on: The 'Over-Parenting Crisis' in School and at Home (2015)
I can attest to parents looking at video feeds being very very common, at least in silicon valley (San Francisco bay area). Its not only day care centers but also parents installing cameras in their home to monitor their child who might be with a nanny. A lot of this is understandable for a parent of a very young kid going to perhaps an unknown day care. Of course there are a lot of ways you can go overboard - and people often do - but the base concern I feel is quite valid.

Genuinely curious - can you give me some examples of these specialities where one can go deeper? In am in this boat now where I have worked on pretty much on all layers of the software stack and I want to now narrow down my focus.

on: Branding workaholism as a desirable lifestyle choice
I have never experienced such extreme attitude to work anywhere personally in my 10+ years of experience working in SV, across four different employers, I do, however, hear anecdotes of tough demands at some startups but that does seem all that pervasive either.

Suffering the same problems with technology with my 7 year old as so many other parents. I am inspired by your story to do the same for him. I too am in a 2 bedroom apartment. I would really appreciate if you can give some pointers on how one could go about creating such a workshop and any DYI magazine recommendations.
