I doubt this policy is going to last long - the biggest and most important Instagram users as far as I can tell are celebrities (incl. professionals and other popular persons), and they sure as hell will do something if Instagram starts selling/licensing the photos to anyone who wants them.

Coupled with the other big mistake of separating themselves from Twitter, I'd say Instagram is well on their way of becoming the next MySpace.

"I personally hate guns. I have never owned or even fired one. I wish they didn’t exist, but they do" - Everyone should try to put at least two dozen rounds down the range. It's a great experience, and it can help you focus, make your mind faster and clearer (IPSC is simply awesome - go to an event).

I don't really care about the self defense aspect - even though it's enticing, having some of my stuff stolen is probably better than killing a person.

Oh yeah, that kills them pretty fast. I've had the same experience with my backup cellphone and mp3 player, had to buy new batteries.

jakeonthemove | 13 years ago | on: Building my Own Laptop

That's very weird: my laptops stay plugged and on 24/7 for months at a time, and the batteries still last around 2.5 hours. These are 4 year old Li-Ion batteries I'm talking about (they used to last 3 hours when they were new).

jakeonthemove | 13 years ago | on: Instagram Photos Will No Longer Appear In Twitter Streams At All

That's pretty annoying, actually, but it's a good example of what can happen when these services (used by millions of people) change hands.

On a related note, Cinemagr.am, which I find pretty interesting, should also focus more on their own website instead of relying completely on Twitter, Facebook and iOS/Android apps...

jakeonthemove | 13 years ago | on: Do not track is dying

It's because the website owners choose a machine gun over a rifle when it comes to ads - instead of carefully selecting and testing ads for each page, they just slap half a dozen of them on every page and hope some get clicked on. It's very annoying for the readers/users, hence the popularity of ABP and NS.

Of course, the former approach takes more work, but the results are worth it in the long run...

jakeonthemove | 13 years ago | on: The Myth of American Meritocracy

"The worst part of "work hard and you may become a millionaire" is for the majority it is a lie"

What else is there to believe in? I find the supposedly realistic belief that "life is hard and then you die" very depressing. From personal experience, the only thing keeping me going in my worst times is the thought that I can still turn things around and succeed (again) - otherwise I would just give up because what the f am I living for?

And I don't see success as being a millionaire - people define success in different ways, to each his own. You gotta have something to keep you going and it does feel better to believe that you're just temporarily down rather than being a born loser who will die a loser.

jakeonthemove | 13 years ago | on: The Myth of American Meritocracy

It's a better way of thinking than "I'm poor, I don't think I stand a chance". Even if people don't become rich or successful, they still feel better about themselves.

The "work hard and you may become a millionaire" undertone is a good thing.

jakeonthemove | 13 years ago | on: Windows 8 — Disappointing Usability for Both Novice and Power Users

But you do HAVE to use it! Start computer - Metro, Open app - Metro, Search for something - Metro, Shutdown/Restart - Metro, Windows Updates - Metro, Control Panel - Metro, switch apps - Metro, and more. It's a real PITA when you get the huge goddamn Start Menu when you want to do something simple...

And even if you do reduce that to a minimum (which is possible), it's still stupid - here you are working with 4 windows open on something, completely forgetting that you're on 8, you want to do some random simple operation and BAM - METRO IN YOUR FACE! :-)

jakeonthemove | 13 years ago | on: Ron Paul’s Farewell Address: The Internet Can Stop Big Government

Why the hell doers everyone think a libertarian government would be pushing the ideology to the extreme? It doesn't happen with the other two parties, and it definitely wouldn't happen with libertarians at the helm.

They would compromise because it's just impossible to do otherwise.

IMO, they have a lot of great ideas that Reps and Dems don't even consider (which is why they probably label Libs "crazy").

jakeonthemove | 13 years ago | on: First Teleportation From One Macroscopic Object to Another

I think it'll be more akin to the situation with through hole and SMD components. The former allowed one to tinker with PCBs with a simple soldering iron, while the latter require a reworking station no matter what you want to do.

Thankfully, these stations have dropped in price a lot - you can easily buy a good one for ~$200-300, which would allow you to repair your phone, modify your motherboard, resolder memory chips and whatnot...

How much is "a few euros" exactly? Because you won't go anywhere without food and shelter, and last time I checked, the cheapest bread was E1.70 and a bus ticket E1.50, and it adds up pretty fast...
