jblesage | 11 years ago | on: Ask HN: How much traffic does a job board site need for paid listings?

Depends on your niche.

If you are catering to a very select, focused audience then you don't need volume, because the specificity is your selling point.

There is a lot more than traffic that companies look for in a job board. Since your site is based around educational content, try to find profitable, untapped markets related to this and focus on only those markets at the beginning.

You can be creative with this: for example, hedge funds routinely pay top dollar to find the best PhD students in math-related subjects, so maybe there is a way to bring both together.

Love the app and gladly paid the full price. Only downside for me so far is the image quality -- most look ok, but many look bad with really low resolutions, even on my non-retina MBA.

I have a hyphenated first name, and was told it was invalid. Replaced the hyphen with a space, was again told my first name was invalid.

Maybe worth looking into your broken name validation.

If I pull down on Chrome on Nexus 4 and let it refresh, it causes a continual loop of refreshing the page until I scroll down again. Was able to reproduce it a few times.

Ironically, that scrolling social media box on the side was covering some of the text while reading this on my galaxy s, leaving me wishing you had implemented some kind of responsive design.

They offer the ability to receive payments from international customers, but opening an account requires a US bank account.

jblesage | 14 years ago | on: Ask HN: What is a good alternative to PayPal?

Go with Beanstream as the payment gateway, and either Chargify or Recurly for the recurring payments. I've personally had no problem with this combination on many projects, and all of my clients are canadian companies.

jblesage | 15 years ago | on: Quit my job as a Front End Engineer. What next?

1) Assuming you want to work for an existing startup, I would avoid generic job sites like Monster. Instead I would look into sites that focus on startups such as http://www.startuply.com/ and jobs offered by the Y Combinator set of companies: http://news.ycombinator.com/jobs. Do as much reading as possible into the type of role you want to provide and how willing you are to take a risk on a company which may or may not be successful.

2) If you are looking to create your own business, make sure you are getting in for the right reasons. Looking to make a quick buck with an overnight viral app is not a plan. Make sure you work on a plan for a business that provides legitimate value to the market, and try to think of how your particular skillset makes you the most qualified person to start that business.
