This is awesome news for marketplaces who see the value in processing payments. Marketplace payments are a tough egg to crack and after meeting their CEO, Bill, and learning more of future plans, I think they're headed in the right direction.

To build on gtcameron:

The call comparison is bad -- the first one is when the phone is "unlocked" and the "new" one is when the phone is in a locked state. Also, the previous version would show a picture if you had a picture associated to the contact.

And, if anything, with weather, and in general iOS was the first mobile OS which allowed you to horizontally scroll through screens -- I feel that that is the bigger "design" element stolen than a particular font/color choice.

Let's not forget about the pinch to zoom, etc.

Lesson here? Everyone borrows from each other. But I don't think the examples here are that damning. I think iOS borrowed much more from android than WP7/8. (Look at the modal dialogs -- other than rounded corners, they're nearly identical to Android's)

AND Chris Miller got his dates wrong -- the multitasking in windows phone and iOS was stolen from WebOS -- which came out in 2009. Not 2011.

It looks the same on iOS 7 because Apple hasn't updated any of their non-preloaded apps yet. (iTunes Connect, Apple Store, iTunes U, Podcasts, iBooks are all other examples which have not been updated)

Given that FMF made it into the keynote both when it was introduced, and yesterday, I'd say it's important to them. (Not just text on a slide)

Edit: Whoops, I was thinking about Find My iPhone from the keynote yesterday, my bad. It was introduced in a keynote before.

The Settings app, Safari app and Compass app icon's are all pretty bad. (too much detail compared to the rest)

I do agree with the general sentiment that the icons, in general, do not fit with the rest of the design decisions.

Stitched leather did make it onto iOS 6, by way of Find My Friends.

I'm not overly for flat design or overly against skeuomorphism, but Find My Friends was horrendous.

While Atlanta is in the south, Atlanta proper is much like any other big city. There is an unbelievable amount of great food and every restaurant has vegetarian options (my wife is one), etc.

I will admit that I hate the weather. I'd take 50's-70's any day over the 6 months of 90+ degree weather with 50%+ humidity we have here in Atlanta.

joeblossom | 13 years ago | on: Introducing Android Studio

Doubtful, given it is not web-based.

edit: There is nothing definitively saying it is not web-based, but I do feel as if that would be a big talking point when they first introduced it if it were.

joeblossom | 13 years ago | on: Facebook buys Parse

"full mobile back-end" is pushing it. Don't get me wrong, I love what Parse has brought to the market, but the capability of it is limited at the moment.

One of the biggest limitations is the length for which cloud code methods can run. (Nothing longer than a second, IIRC)

You can build a social sharing app, or share some data between apps, but building a "product" on it is limited to very simple cases.

joeblossom | 13 years ago | on: Heroku 2X Dynos in Public Beta

You can also consider moving elsewhere -- I'm paying $9.50/month to webfaction to host my app. While it took about a half hour to set everything up, (In my case rails, postgres, etc) I use Capistrano to deploy just as easily/quickly as Heroku.

Certainly cheaper than paying for 2 dynos.

joeblossom | 13 years ago | on: Roger Ebert dies at 70 after battle with cancer

Seriously -- My mother died when I was 2, 24 years ago. The type of cancer she had took her quickly -- however, today, the available treatments would have likely given her a relatively normal life.

Back then there was nothing. No one knew really what to do with her particular type. It was all a gamble with a lot of "Go to Mexico to try some experimental treatments"

joeblossom | 13 years ago | on: Yahoo's Mayer gets internal flak for more rigorous hiring

Is requiring a top university really a new thing at Yahoo?

I remember 5-6 years ago when I was applying for internships I couldn't even finish my application as it required you to pick from a list of universities (no option of "Other") which also happened to be the top 20.

Perhaps they stopped this for a time?

joeblossom | 13 years ago | on: My Interview Questions for Potential Employers

I agree -- I've turned down a job before I received a formal offer (was told one was in the works) partly because no one could tell me what the vacation policy was. Not that I'm only interested in time off work, but I do live a few states away from the rest of my family (and many friends) and I'd like to visit them once in a while and not feel guilty.

joeblossom | 13 years ago | on: Ask HN: Have you ever been sued by your startup?

Have you looked into whether or not your school provides free legal services?

My university's student government paid for two pretty awesome lawyers (through a student tax) which could be used for pretty much any legal matter (from starting up a business to criminal charges) for free. At the very least they can probably refer you to someone who can help you.

joeblossom | 13 years ago | on: Spotify vs Rdio

Rdio does #1, and has the ability for #2, although I'm not sure if there are many apps consuming Rdio's API.

joeblossom | 13 years ago | on: Spotify vs Rdio

User interface is huge for me, especially from a mobile app standpoint. In my opinion, Spotify's mobile app is pretty terrible when compared to Rdio's.

Also, I love the "Collection" feature of Rdio which puts the music I like right at my finger tips rather than creating playlists for every artist with Spotify.

Radio is also available with Rdio for an artist, collection, etc.
