on: It's not too late to ditch the ad-based business model and build a better web
I don't see this as any different than buying something from amazon though, which anyone can do.
Micropayments are a problem, but as long as you buy a few dollars worth of reddit gold it is more akin to buying a gift card than a micropayment.
The psychological issues are valid, but I'm not seeing technological issues in this specific case.

I've bought reddit gold several times and it was incredibly easy. What specific obstacles are you talking about?

Data caps seem fine as long as they keep up with technology. The problem is that even 5 years ago 300GB was barely reasonable and it is completely unreasonable today.
What I mean by "fine" is I would rather have a datacap and a higher speed that could potentially exceed the data cap if used 24/7 than a slower speed that creates a soft cap anyway.

I have a hard time understanding why anyone would lease a service that is vital to their job, or at least without a backup. If your livelihood depends on something then spend your money appropriately. Even if you did sign up for CC you can still have an older version ready to go in a pinch.

Prevention efforts could include ways to talk about your problems without being afraid that people would treat you differently or force you to do something you didn't want to do. There would have to be an absolute guarantee of privacy of course.

on: Gmail Overhaul Has Marketers Saying 'Ack'
I have had a problem where people sign up for stuff using my email address. Yes I can (and do) unsubscribe, but it is really nice that these are now pretty much all filtered out of my inbox automatically.
I've never seen a marketer verify email to make sure it was actually the requester who owns the email like other web services do.

Every time I navigated within the site I got a popup telling me to sign in with facebook or google. Incredibly frustrating and I don't even know why I would care to sign into that site.

Were you using timemachine, and if so did the photographs get removed from there as well? No matter what, that sounds like an incredibly poor user experience.

I have a terrible feeling that WSJ is using hackernews here. This post is pretty meaningless, and the title does not agree with the few sentences of an "article."
"Quiting" has a much different connotation than being funded by your employer.

What is your proposal to automate this? Remember there is very large delay and blackouts that happen.
After they do it by hand several times, sure automate it.

on: A bold but simple login system
I have a text document on my computer that lists all the websites/programs with username/password. I also use autocomplete (which IMO is basically the same as having a document with all passwords.) I can have unique passwords for every single website without relying on a third party cloud solution. And for the passwords I use often, I have them memorized anyway.
If something is compromised (which has happened) then I have a list of every single site where I have an account, and can change the passwords.
A side benefit to this is if someone needs to access something (most likely while traveling, or if I'm dead) all the information is there for them.

I would be fine with a data transfer cap, if it scaled with technology or time. However looking at my internet provider, I have not seen an increase in the data cap since it was implemented. Meanwhile both services and technological capability have increased.

I fail to see the relevance of this.
In addition it somewhat upsets me that someone could get jail time for making an offensive comment. Depending on the jurisdiction or culture, I know I have said things that would be offensive to someone (specifically regarding religion.) To be faced with jail time over something like that does not sound like something I would expect from a western country.

I've read a lot of ebooks (even long before I got a kindle) and I have to say that I read them for the story, not the presentation.
What is wrong with ebooks is that there are still books that I _cannot_ buy. I want to give the publishers/writers my money and they simply will not accept it. For me its e or nothing, I don't have the space to store paper books, and to be honest I just like ebooks better.

I don't understand why you have to "develop hardware" for this. Unless you are willing to produce hardware at a loss its already incredibly cheap to take off the shelf parts and put together a media box. To me it sounds like a lot of over engineering and blatant waste of resources.
