I've found that Instagram use is growing amongst nearly all of my friend groups (including HN demo and non), while use of all other social apps is fading (not counting WhatsApp). For reference, mostly age 24-32 in the US and Western Europe.

Fantastic idea. Pour overs are the fastest decent brewing method, and usually the cheapest. Making it portable is really cool little innovation. If the coffee is good, I could see this really selling

In Portugal, very few places accept credit cards, or even debit cards in many cases. This is mainly so the businesses can avoid the crazy fees. It's inconvenient, but the prices are probably slightly cheaper, so people don't really complain.

Nailed it. Traveling is amazing, but it certainly loses its luster after a while. I must say we're extremely fortunate to have been able to even make it to this point though.

React Native doesn't deliver a poor user experience though. It's not the right choice for every project, but in most cases users won't be able to discern between RN and native.

kcole16 | 10 years ago | on: Ask HN: How happy are you working as a programmer?

That's basically the point of most law and financial firms (at least when they start out). Until it went public (and still to a large degree), the whole point of Goldman Sachs was to make its' employees rich.

This article makes a great point regarding ISIS aim to turn western nations against the refugees. I can't even fathom how it feels to be forced from your home, then be greeted with hostility just about everywhere. It's not hard to imagine developing the sense of hatred that leads to irrational decisions (like joining ISIS), especially in the younger refugees.

I have no idea what the solution is, but I think it's clear banning refugees isn't it. I understand the fear, and I'm as scared as anyone about the potential for new attacks. Still, we need to unite everyone against ISIS, not drive new recruits towards them.

kcole16 | 10 years ago | on: Ask HN: Python Enthusiast – How to get my foot through the door?

Start talking to local dev shops and startups that heavily use Python and offer to work for free (as you mentioned).

Most will probably deny you due to lack of resources (onboarding volunteers still takes engineering hours), but one might take a chance.

Shoot me an email if you want to chat (address in my profile). I was in the exact same spot as you 18 months ago, and have been employed as an engineer since then.
