>How are you going to sell ads to that?

I'm reluctant to type this, but there's definitely a few ways they can monetize the experience. Just look at how some other companies have monetized their users:

- Roll a video ad inside of a modal popup before showing you the result of your query/question.

- Give users a number of free queries/day, then prompt them to pay a subscription fee for "unlimited" queries.

I'm sure they'll find a way. You might not like it, but they'll figure it out.

kevinmrose | 3 years ago | on: State Farm says 105 Kia, Hyundai models ‘ineligible’ for new insurance in LA

"Two State Farm employees told WWL-TV that the restrictions apply in Georgia, Louisiana, Oregon, Washington, and Pennsylvania. The restrictions do not apply to current policyholders, only to drivers who are looking for new policies."

Looks like it's not just Louisiana. I wonder if they'll be extending this to other states, or if other insurers will be following suit? I haven't been following this issue, but I feel like Kia and Hyundai should be doing some sort of recall to fix the problem instead of allowing their customers to suffer, it can't be good for PR.

kevinmrose | 3 years ago | on: Ask HN: Are LinkedIn Recommendations/Skills sections useful when job hunting?

I wouldn't say they increase the chance of getting hired directly, but the skills, endorsements and recommendations will all increase your chances of a recruiter finding and contacting you, so it's a good idea to leverage them. It's really just SEO, you have to have the keywords on your profile if you want to show up when recruiters are looking for people with those skills.

Here's a few other tips that might be helpful: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/20140320151331-142790335-11-s...

I really like the photography and music so far. The games are probably a bit easier than I was hoping for, but it looks like they become more challenging as you level up so I might just need to grind on it for a little bit longer.

My only complaint is that for some reason the music wouldn't play for me until I opened up the settings menu and toggled it off and on again, at which point it sounded like it was playing two songs at the same time. Not sure if it's a browser issue on my side (Brave), but the problem seemed to fix itself after reloading the the page.

Anyways, congrats on the launch!

Hadn't thought of those use cases, but it does seem like it could be pretty helpful in those scenarios, especially when doing extended narration for training and tutorial videos. It is kind of worrying that phone scammers, hackers and other bad actors could leverage this technology for much more nefarious purposes, which was the thought that drove my initial reaction.

Bing has made a lot of bets over the years that haven't really panned out, maybe it will be different this time.

Granted, Microsoft is much less reliant on Bing's ad revenue than Alphabet is on Google's, which might allow Bing to really change the search experience without having to worry too much about selling ads. It's going to be interesting to see how these products evolve in ways that serve both the user and the business interests behind the search results, especially if we start seeing VC backed AI search engines pop up which don't need to focus on existing advertiser revenue.

kevinmrose | 3 years ago | on: How Twitter moderated the Covid debate

I don't know if we can call it outright lying, but going from "you don't need a mask" to basically saying you shouldn't be allowed in public without one seems like either incompetence or corruption on the CDC's part. You can argue semantics all you want to try to justify their behavior, but that is what people see and it doesn't increase trust or confidence in them as an organization.

kevinmrose | 3 years ago | on: How Twitter moderated the Covid debate

So they still don't know if masks work? Can we get a concrete answer on this at some point? It seems like this type of back and forth messaging is the problem. Maybe we should all apologize to people who questioned the need to wear masks if we still don't know whether or not they're effective.

Twitter staff taking action against users at the direction of the FBI does seem like a topic worthy of discussion, though it seems like there are a lot of people here who would rather just pretend it never happened.
