That could pose its own ethical issues, especially if companies start accidentally creating documentation and links to guthib.com without realizing it's redirecting them. At least this way it's clear you've made a mistake.

on: Robinhood Play Store listing went from 329K reviews to 180K in few hours
WSB has over 5 million subscribers right now (up 1 million from yesterday alone) and some threads get over 100,000 comments on a single thread. I don't find it hard to believe that a 100k Android users got angry enough with Robinhood to leave a negative review.

Would an alternative be to offer auto-generated usernames that you have one-shot to generate a password for and if you lose that password you're gone? Something like opposite-dwindling-zodiac, casino-smile-widget, or creative-crumpled-dismiss?
If you choose to add a phone number as a recovery (and for contact finding) that's your optional choice.

on: Simple Bank Is Closing
I'd agree with both sides of this. I was a customer for years and anytime I had an issue they'd respond very quickly. However, getting my wife to get an account approved so we could have the shared/joint account feature was impossible and they would never explain why.

I was forced to ditch Simple after their ridiculous application policies wouldn't allow my spouse to create an account for us to have a joint account. Since doing so, I've signed up for YouNeedABudget (YNAB) [1], and couldn't be happier. Simple was a great service and I'm sad it is calling quits, but I've outgrown it.

on: Higher Ed: Enough Already
Would the solution be a shift in the expected outcome of testing to:
A) Project-based testing proving critical thinking rather than memorization, and
B) Testing with the understanding that as long as you can find the answer via Google, notes, or a book in a reasonable time frame, this shows you understand enough to proceed? Is this not how much of the working world works as it is?

Often times these browsers also require microphone and webcam access and track eye movement. Huge privacy violation, but I also don't have a proposal on an alternative other than proctored in-person tests.

Let's say it takes someone 30 minutes in total to drive to your house, replace it, and drive back to their own house.
If they did it every day, that's 15 hours in a month, or 182.5 hours in a year.
If you paid that person $1500 for the year, that's $8.22 per hour, above federal minimum wage.

$1300 will get you a 1300+ sq ft house with a 2 car garage in many places outside of California. A one bedroom condo does not scream luxury to me, especially at $3700 a month.

Simply knowing salary tells us almost nothing about the benefit(s) of your move. How much more/less do you spend on:
* Vehicle Registration, Public Transportation, Gas
* Housing (rent/mortgage)
* Sales tax
* Etc.
The housing is a huge factor, given that 30% of $55k is $1300/mo (A decent house in most of America), yet 30% of 150k is $3750/mo (A nice cardboard box in the bay area)

on: Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
Do you have a hobby? Most of my side projects (and if you notice, a lot of the projects here too) stem from a hobby. It's not work if you have fun doing it, and if it's a side project then you can stop whenever it stops being fun.

I've helped a friend with this one (I have a MP Select V2 full size), and I can tell you the thing is a workhorse. Pretty sure he has it running 5 days a week with 5-7 hour prints per day. He keeps the moving parts lubricated but that's about it. Just set him up with Octoprint to make the loading and monitoring easier.

on: Study: Two Monitors or One Ultrawide
I use 3x 24" monitors, all side by side horizontal with a minimal bezel and love it. I generally have email open on my right monitor, web open on the left, and productivity center. Works well for me considering it's my "office" computer, not my development computer. Dev has 2x 24" horizontal, with a VM on the right and Windows on the left.

on: Ask HN: As a freelancer, what's the best app to track finances?
I've used Simple
https://www.simple.com/ as my primary checking for years and love it. I create "Goals" as buffer money pockets for things like "Savings", "Investment", and "Credit Card Buffer", and then use their expenses feature to automatically deduct certain bill amounts every payday. Their features are open enough to where you should be able to flex it to your needs. For example the "Goals" also has an auto-fill, but I just use them manually since I don't usually have a set amount I'm trying to save, just a certain percent per payday.

on: Gone in six seconds? Exploiting car alarms
I'd love to see statistics on how many injuries/deaths occur from recalled problems that users don't bother getting fixed.
I know I've had cars where certain defects (non-safety) were recalled, yet it took 2-3 weeks lead to get an appointment with the dealership, and several days in the shop once it was there (without a loaner vehicle). And I'm not talking full engine rebuilds either, just simple fixes. Most of the time I don't even bother anymore because it's such a hassle.
