Vietnam: An Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975 by Sir Max Hastings

Great account of the history of the conflict in Vietnam up to and including the Vietnam War

kpwags | 6 years ago | on: Don’t Put Your Work Email on Your Personal Phone

This is certainly a very good reason to not put your work account on your personal phone, but my primary reason not to is that it's my device and I pay for the service. If my company needs me to be available beyond my 9-5 workday, they can pay for it.

If there's an emergency, they can always call, but I don't like being "always on".

I like it, but I have a weird bug.

It could have something to do with some of my extensions, but every time I open the new Twitter on Firefox, it has me logged out...but if I refresh the page, I'm back to being logged in and I can browse my feed.

I seem to recall Gmail doing this a couple years ago. I was working for a marketing company at the time and there were questions as to how we'd track metrics for Gmail addresses since Google would essentially "open" every email and load the images on their servers for their users.

kpwags | 6 years ago | on: Microsoft's eBook Apocalypse Shows the Dark Side of DRM

This is why people should be legally allowed to remove the DRM from the items they purchase.

I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to remove the DRM from the books I buy for my Kindle or the like. Assuming I don't share them with friends, family or strangers (which is a different issue), the authors, publishers, & copyright holders aren't losing sales.

Does OneDrive encrypt data for personal users? Last I saw they only encrypted business accounts.

kpwags | 7 years ago | on: Amazon says wage hike ‘more than compensates’ for loss of bonuses

I can understand some of the frustration, especially for those making just shy of $15 before the raise, but even if the raise is only from $14 to $15, that still is around $2,000/yr (assuming 40 hour work week) that is guaranteed the way a bonus generally isn't.

I would almost always prefer a raise over a one-time bonus for that exact reason. In my experiences, I can't always count on my company giving me a yearly bonus.

kpwags | 7 years ago | on: McMansion envy spreads as Americans demand more bedrooms and baths

That layout is how my house is laid out. The guest room is hardly used, but my wife works remotely, and I like to play around with side projects, so the office is quite useful.

For me personally, it's nice to have the room set aside for "work", keeping me a little less distracted.

I guess that kind of makes sense, since my house was built in the 1950s. It doesn't feel all that large though.

I will admit that I might be a little skewed given that comparing my house to the others in my neighborhood, it's on the smaller size. Most houses I've seen go on the market in my neighborhood are generally 3-400+ sqft larger.

I have a 1300 square foot home with 3 bedrooms & 1.5 bathrooms. While my wife and I don't have kids, I'm happy with the size. Anything bigger and I feel like it'd be overkill for us. I wish the floorplan was a little more open or could be easier to open up, but otherwise I feel the size is perfect for our needs.

Obviously if children enter the picture, things might change, but I feel like having a house that's too big is more of a pain than it's worth...especially when you need to clean for company.
