krsgoss | 14 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do you deal with the isolation of telecommuting?

I've done it for over three years now. At first, it was really tough, now I actually enjoy it vs. the alternative. Some things that have worked for me:

- Invest in a good workspace, desk, chair, monitor, etc. Good ergonomics help immensely.

- Exercise regularly each and every day.

- Practice good hygiene as if you were working at an office. Shower and dress everyday!

- Get out of the house regularly to meet with peers if you can. I do lunch at least once a week with friends/colleagues to break things up a bit.

- I've used coworking spaces periodically which can be good if you find interesting people there.

- Start and stop at regular hours each day. I also try not to work anywhere and everywhere in the house. Stick to your office if you can.

Good luck!

Nice work and thanks for contributing. Look forward to trying this out on a future project I'm working on.

krsgoss | 15 years ago | on: Ask HN: please review my app/site: cardealerquotes.org

At first glance I thought it resembled a Maxim-esque portal site as opposed to place to get the lowdown on a car. It seems like you're trying to do too much here with the various content categories.

Why not just focus on the niche of affluent people seeking expensive sports cars? Carwoo for higher end vehicles maybe that cater to a more affluent demographic?

Maybe profile a car each week as a way to drive quote requests. I'd focus solely on that aspect before adding anything else. Kudos for starting though... keep at it and good luck!

MixPanel also offers a platform capability that lets you offer analytics to end users of your application. I haven't used it personally, and am not affiliated with them but here's the link:

Might be a quick way to offer something and see how it sticks with your audience.

krsgoss | 15 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do you successfully work at home with a family?

Congrats! I've been remote for over two years now. I also have a one year old at home and was working from the house when she was born. It was extremely difficult to focus given the inevitable distractions of being first time parents.

I now rent a desk out at an incubator and it's been much nicer. I have a clean separation from work and home and get showered and dressed each and every morning like a normal person! :)

Even though I'm a FT employee right now, I'd probably still try and go this route even if I was freelancing.

Pretty interesting. I would definitely use this if it was in my market. I don't bother using circulars given the hassle of searching, comparing, and clipping. I'm also not a fan of how much they contribute to the junk mail epidemic we have.

There's a lot of interesting data to be consumed here if you can collect it from the various chains and regions. Good luck!

It seems like most of these services are mostly boutique clothes with higher price points. Is this due them just going after more affluent customers, or is it difficult to get wholesale prices from lower cost vendors?

Seems like others might be drawn to this if they didn't have to shell out $200 for a pair of jeans each time. I definitely get the desire for premiere clothing/shopping just wondering if it can scale down the price line and still work.

krsgoss | 15 years ago | on: Dress.me: Because Guys Hate to Shop

Trunk Club is exactly how I would of expected Dress.me to work if I were signing up. I think just recommending doesn't go far enough. Getting a box in the mail with everything put together for you seems much nicer.

Having a personal shopper is appealing I think. That being said, their brands are definitely on the higher end and more than what I'd probably be willing to spend on clothes. E.G. Denim ranging from $165 - $225 means a single outfit could get pretty expensive quick.

Still, I can definitely see the high end of the market being viable though. Seems like demand would exist at mid-market prices though too.

krsgoss | 15 years ago | on: Your own company? You can do it

I started programming in VB after having dabbled in old school C64 Basic and some Pascal. I had zero experience and knew I wanted to be a developer one day. I got turned down from one place (a help desk job) for being "too ambitious" when I said I really wanted to get into development some day.

I started in help desks, took some skills tests so recruiters could pitch me to shitty consulting gigs, and worked my way up through professional services and eventually into a fulltime dev role at real software shop with truly talented developers.

I definitely wasn't handrolling assembler in my teen years (or ever), but I've been able to make a great living by scratching and clawing my way in!

krsgoss | 15 years ago | on: Great. Skype is down.

Agreed. I get enormous benefit from Skype for next to nothing so the criticisms seem somewhat unjustified since most people fall into the same bucket (free.) It's still an excellent service IMO.

krsgoss | 15 years ago | on: Son, as soon as someone puts their hands on you...

Does this advice help at all with girls? Girls seemed to bully socially rather than physically when I was in school. What do you tell a young girl who's in a similar situation? "Punch her in the nose?"

I had a similar experience (and resolution) in middle school and I agree with the author's conclusion. But now I have an 8 month old daughter who may experience this type of bullshit one day, and I'm not sure what advice I'd give her just now.

krsgoss | 15 years ago | on: Ask HN: What's Your Story?

I can fondly remember changing the terminal background and border color for the first time on my C64:

10 POKE 53280, 0 20 POKE 53281, 0

I can still remember working through the BASIC examples in the manual and magazines. Good times.
