on: Exodus from GitHub, but just not to SourceForge
Still a million daily users and 500,000 projects. You can say it's dead because you don't use it, but we're just focused on doing right by them.

Thanks. We obviously have to do a better job of getting the word out. I appreciate what you said though.

Because over a million people daily still use SourceForge, and over 500,000 projects do as well. We're focused on doing right by them.

It was 3 years ago, and completely different ownership.

on: Exodus from GitHub, but just not to SourceForge
Almost nothing in this article is accurate. We’ve been doing everything we can to improve SourceForge and we did not hide anything. The writer has an axe to grind for some reason, and maybe his anger is warranted, but it's definitely directed at the wrong people.

Yeah they used to. That's why I purchased SourceForge and removed all the adware. Completely different owners. We had nothing to do with those decisions and reversed them immediately.

Thanks. We still have 500,000 projects and over a million daily users, so at the very least, we're focused on doing right by them. But the more the merrier, and the more options out there the better the OSS community is.

Yeah that was bad. Which is why I bought SourceForge and removed the bundled adware immediately in 2016. We're completely different owners and anyone involved with the bundling back then is no longer at SourceForge.

And a summary of what has changed at SourceForge since it was acquired in 2016:
Removed bundled adware from projects immediately
Implemented malware scans for every single project on SourceForge
Site completely redesigned
Added multi-factor authentication
Removed ads for developers (logged in users will not see any ads)
Added HTTPS support for project website hosting

on: SourceForge Hiding Fact That They Have Lost the Latest Revision of SVN?
Hi, president of SourceForge here. This issue affected a very small number of projects (.03%) and they were contacted directly. It is very unfortunate but we are not "hiding it".
Also, I see a lot of comments here not realizing SourceForge has been under new ownership since 2016. Since we took over we immediately eliminated all bundled adware, we also now scan all projects for malware, all downloads are now over https, & more. Big redesign just rolled out too https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/06/under...
We've taken steps to ensure we never lose any commits again.

It's something we're trying to come up with solutions for, so that we can reduce or eliminate ads on SourceForge. But for now, any user or developer who creates an account on SourceForge will never see ads.

GitHub is much larger by traffic, but that doesn't mean we are going to abandon the million users we get every day and the 430,000 projects hosted at SourceForge. It's not a zero sum game. Some people like using GitHub's suite of tools, while also taking advantage of SourceForge mailing lists, project website hosting, detailed download statistics, and distribution/discovery capability. Our GitHub Sync Tool lets project owners use both with ease.

Thanks for the bug report I'll take a look. My company didn't put ads in the downloads, and we when we took over we stopped that practice. I think most people can discern the difference, but if not it's okay. We're just focused on doing right by the million daily users and 430,000 projects hosted here.

We get over a million users per day looking to download OSS. If you have binaries on SF you can reach these people through our very robust discovery tools and strength of our search results in Google. We also give project admins detailed download statistics.
