We are a small web development team mainly focused on Ruby/Rails, along with expertise across the rest of the stack - CoffeeScript, Spine.js, SASS, LESS, Chef, PostgreSQL, Redis etc. We have domain expertise integrating with external APIs such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, and also in handling high load both in terms of web traffic and background processing with Sidekiq or Resque.

We are a whole team who work well together. We can either integrate to your existing dev team or take and implement a standalone project. As many of us are overseas (China, Ireland) we are less expensive than many other development companies (£400 - £500 / day or potentially £55k / year per developer depending on project length, size of team etc).

I was once asked "What's the worst thing about you?". Fortunately I had prepared for it and said something about not being a confident presenter and then outlining how I was fixing that.

The only thing the interviewer learned was that I knew how to answer that question. However I learned that the interviewer was not someone I wanted to work for.

The downsides to asking that question far outweigh the benefits. An interviewer should be trying to give a good impression of themselves as well as finding out about the candidate and this question does the opposite.

I agree. I think the attribute most important to my job is being able to turn a complex specification into an app with clean architecture, with no two way coupling between components, generally useful parts abstracted away into reusable code, usage of existing open source modules instead of rolling my own where appropriate and so on. I don't think this test would reveal much of that about me.

That said, for the first time in my career I was given a test to do and that seemed to be specifically designed to see how well I could architect code and yet I still screwed it up. That might show that I'm a bad programmer, or it might show that it's dangerous to use a short test to generalise about someone's ability.

I like to take jobs on a contract basis, that way there's less risk for the clients as they can cut me whenever if it doesn't work. As a result of that the interview process is usually pretty quick and informal and I can show on a day to day basis that I am good at what I do.

How many hours per week does your average contract take up? I charge just under half that, but my contracts are usually full-time hours for months and sometimes years at a time.

When I meet people from the Valley they tend to talk how my startup might succeed and the interesting directions we could take. Conversely when I meet startup people from London (where I'm based) who haven't been to the Valley they tend to talk about why my startup might fail, usually focusing on competitors. Both are useful to talk about, but I think this reflects the optimism/cynicism divide between the Valley and everywhere else.

We said we'd move to the Valley if we were accepted to YC this winter, but I think the culture over there might be reason enough to do it regardless.
