on: Bootstrapped, Profitable, & Proud: Envato
I've spent more money through Envato sites (Themeforest specifically) than any other web site except for Ebay. I am glad to pay for the quality products they provide (through the designers of course). Keep up the good work.

on: Bitbucket Joins Atlassian
I used to be a Bitbucket customer but moved to repositoryhosting.com a few months ago. This is great news as I will likely return to Bitbucket. I stopped using the service this year because I needed many small repos (<15mb) and didn't want to pay upwards of $20-30 per month. Repositoryhosting.com offers unlimited repositories for $6 flat per month. If you require additional space you pay for that.
I really don't get the pricing plans for companies like Bitbucket and Github. $5-10 per month for personal projects is fine but up past that? Do these companies think for single user accounts all these repositories are active at once? How much more does it cost Github to store an additional repository for me (not to even mention gists which are stored as repos) because they are charging $1 per month to backup a few mbs. I would love to know the average repo size.

I guess it's too much to ask that Google give up Eclipse and start supporting the Oracle owned Netbeans instead.

Yeah, Freenode isn't listed. I guess a service like this could allow spammers to have a field day.

I really like it and can appreciate the technical aspect but I was really hoping for a web enabled IRC client that didn't require me to connect over port 6667.
I would use a web enabled IRC client every day. Crap, maybe you just gave me an idea for my next project.

on: Why Google Became A Carrier-Humping, Net Neutrality Surrender Monkey
Google didn't give it to us Canadians. Google seems to treat their international customers like second rate citizens. If my carrier picked up the N1 I would have bought it no question. $530USD is out of the question after exchange duty and taxes. Granted I don't know if this is due to Google or our carriers but all I know is we aren't getting any good Android handesets.

on: Mad At Google? Are You Mad Enough To Stop Using It? Can You Even Stop Using It?
I genuinely tried Bing when it first came out but it didn't stick. I have been using DuckDuckGo for a few weeks now and I have changed all my default search engines to it. Great features (! search and zero click info, not to mention not storing my search information).
Like you mentioned, Gmail on the other hand is much more difficult to drop. I spent half hour going through http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1121269 looking for a decent solution.

I was going to say why do we need another one but there has been a surprising number of jobs posted in the short time it has been up. Guess it cant hurt to have another board for smaller type companies.

So am I. I can't say I would be happy with Google knowing which content I think is good enough to pay for, they have enough on me already.

Check out www.otherocean.com.
Also my Dad just moved out to Charlottetown last year (from Toronto) for a job. I will post again when I remember the name of the company.

on: Ask HN: When to choose a VPS over shared hosting?
Several VPS providers also offer managed VPS accounts. They secure the distro for you and just give you root to install a few additional items. Most of the initial setup is done for you already.

I used to do this a year or two ago but nowadays 90% of sites dont work properly without javascript. Is your whitelist so big that you dont notice it anymore?

on: Ask HN: (No) Microsoft based start-ups?
With BizSpark startups dont have to pay any licensing costs for some time. I also think that licensing is discounted when you become profitable.
BizSpark aside, I think hosting costs/maintenance is much more. For a $20 512 Linode it would cost a hell of a lot more to run MVC.NET + MSSQL.
